TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 5-9, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and cleaning under guardrail. Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound and westbound left lane closures with right shoulder closures at various locations. Wide loads up to 11-feet in width can proceed through the work zones.

Primary Roads
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Traffic signal work from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15 at West Ridgeway Street (Route 60/220) and Commercial Avenue. This work will take place Monday to Thursday each week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should be alert for shoulder closures on Commercial Avenue and on Business Route 60/220, which will limit parking. The schedule for Sept. 5-9 is as follows:
• Power installation to the new signal at the intersection of Commercial Avenue and Ridgeway Street. Right shoulder closed, Sept. 6, noon to 5p.m and Sept. 7, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Pavement marking installation on Ridgeway Street from Roxbury Street to River Street. Various closures, Sept. 7, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Main Street, westbound from the intersection of Ridgeway Street to Commercial Avenue will be closed September 8, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Westbound traffic will detour onto Ridgeway Street. Ridgway Street, eastbound and westbound, will have two-way traffic during this time.
Bridge construction will occur from September 19, 2011 to October 12, 2012. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 602 – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 0.55 miles west of Route 311 to 4.85 miles east of Route 603. Shoulder closed and possible single-lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 677 (Parsonage Lane) – Pipe replacement and grading. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Various roads – Patching and mowing, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Traffic controlled by flaggers or mobile operation.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 39 – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 0.91 miles east of the West Virginia state line to 1.10 miles west of Route 601. Shoulder closure and possible single-lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe replacement and patching. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Mile marker 56.8, eastbound – Bridge work, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173.9 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and cleaning guardrail area. Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 175 to 192, northbound and southbound – Bridge maintenance on various structures. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 181.7 to 181.9, southbound – Drilling boreholes. Single-lane closed, Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
* Mile marker 191.5, northbound and southbound – Bridge work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.
* (NEW) Mile marker 195, southbound (Timber Ridge area) – Bridge deck work on the bridge over Route 11. Single-lane closure from 9 p.m., Sept. 9 to 7 a.m., Sept. 12 and from 9 p.m., Sept. 23 to 7 a.m., Sept. 26. Work zone set-up and traffic control will closed the exit 195 off-ramp on Sept. 9 and Sept. 23, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. During the bridge deck work, tractor trailers will remain on I-81 and passenger vehicles will take a detour using the exit 195 off-ramp, cross Route 11 with the assistance of flagger traffic control and then re-enter I-81 using the exit 195 on-ramp.
* Mile marker 195 to 189, southbound – Latex overlay. Alternating lane closures, Friday night to Saturday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; and Monday night to Tuesday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* (UPDATE) The northbound left lane will be closed from mile marker 198.8 to 198.6 on Sept. 7 and 8 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to remove a barrier.

Primary Roads
* Route 39 – Repair work on bridge over Maury River at Rockbridge Baths. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday. Flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Sept. 23.

Secondary Roads
* Route 602 (Walkers Creek Road) – Bridge work at 0.05 miles south of Route 724 (Jump Mountain Road) and 1.15 miles west of Route 731 (Dutch Hollow Road). Single-lane closure, Aug. 18 to Sept. 22.
* (NEW) Route 651 (Honey Hollow Road) – Pipe replacement, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 697 (Amole Hollow Road) – Bridge replacement from 0.05 mile south of Route 699 (Wesley Chapel Road) to the dead end. Road closed, Aug. 16 to Sept. 8. Single-lane traffic detour in place. Traffic controlled with a stop and proceed sign.
* Various roads – Brush cutting, pothole repairs, grading and mowing. Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 220, southbound – Pipe repairs, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Estimated completion is October 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Route 600 U – Brush control from Route 84 to 7-miles in. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.
* (NEW) Route 614 (Cowpasture Road) – Pipe replacement and chip seal 1.00 mile north of Route 619 (Botkin Hollow Road). Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 615 – Brush control from Route 678 to Route 250. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.
* Route 615 (Davis Run Road) – Rural rustic project. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 618 – Brush control from Route 614 to dead end. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.
* Route 619 (Botkin Hollow Road) – Rural rustic project. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 620 – Brush control from Route 614 to West Virginia state line. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.

* (NEW) Route 642 (Laurel Fork Road) – Patching, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 654 (Doe Hill Road) – Bridge work at 0.04 miles north of Route 624 (Jack Mountain Road). Road reduced to one 10-foot lane, 24 hours-a-day. Traffic controlled by temporary signals. Estimated completion is mid December.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 87.7 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Litter and debris removal, mowing, cleaning drop inlets, sweeping bridges and sign work. Tuesday to Friday.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris and tree removal. Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 205.58 to 209.85, southbound – Paving work. Paving complete. Installation of rumble strips, pavement markers and guardrail will require a lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of miscellaneous activities is Oct. 16.
* Mile marker 209 to 228, northbound and southbound – Bridge deck maintenance on various structures. Single-lane closures, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 210.4 to 210.7 – Repair of bridges over Route 675. Lane closures, Monday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* Mile marker 212.2 to 211.9 – Repair bridges over Route 662. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. Mid-June to September, there will be nighttime single-lane closures I-81 southbound between exit 217 and exit 213, Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. Under-drain installation and asphalt placement will occur from mile marker 218 to 214, southbound. Alternating lane and shoulder closures, Sunday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of under-drain and asphalt work is Sept. 30.
* Mile marker 219.3 to 219.6, northbound and southbound – Repair of bridges over Folly Mills Creek. Lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* (NEW) Exit 222, northbound and southbound – Repair of bridges over Route 250. Lane closures, Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 250, eastbound and westbound – Repair of I-81 exit 222 bridges over Route 250. Shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 608 (Battlefield Road, New Hope) – Paving from Route 778 (Knightly Mill Road to Route 254 (Hermitage Road), Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 642 (Mule Academy Road) – Paving from Route 285 (Tinkling Springs Road) to Route 250 (Jefferson Highway). Road closed, Tuesday and Wednesday. Local traffic can enter from the Route 285 intersection.
* Route 652 (University Farm Road) – Roadway upgrades from Route 340 to Route 657 (Indian Ridge Road). Intermittent lane closures. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* Route 698 (Wise Hollow Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 690 (Summit Church Road to the Rockingham County line. Road closed, Aug. 29 to Sept. 9. Detour posted.
* Route 716 – Road reconstruction, widening and pipe installation from Route 629 to Route 250. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is early October.
* (NEW) Route 753 (Slate Hill Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 732 (Roman Road) to Route 752 (Naked Creek Road). Road closed, Sept. 12 to 28. Detour posted.
* Route 862 (Furnace Road) – Roadway upgrades and rural rustic work from Route 601 (Estaline Valley Road) and end of state maintenance. Intermittent lane closures.
* (NEW) Route 1204 (Blacksmith Shop Road) – Roadway upgrades. Intermittent lane closures, Sept. 6-9.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris and litter removal. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 238 to 248, northbound and southbound – Bridge deck maintenance on various structures. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 239, northbound and southbound – Painting bridges over North River. Alternating lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Friday night to Sunday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; and Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late September.
* Mile marker 244.5 to 236.9, southbound – Installation of pavement markers. Left lane closed, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road), eastbound and westbound – Stone shoulder work from 0.50 miles east of Route 921 (Lairs Run Road) to 0.10 miles west of Route 921 and 0.70 miles west of Route 612 (Runions Road). Single-lane traffic, Sept. 6. Work zone lane closures active daily, 7a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic controlled by signs, flaggers and pilot truck.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 782 (Williamsburg Road) – Pipe installation from 0.02 miles west of Route 42 (Harpine Highway) and Route 617 (South Sunset Drive). Road closed, Tuesday and Wednesday.
* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent single lane closures with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.
* Route 1417 (East Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1418 (Second Street) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Bridge work from Route 42 (Harpine Highway) to Route 1415 (Early Road). Intermittent lane and bridge closures. Work estimated to begin on July 18.
* Route 1424 (Lindsey Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1432 (Fifth Street) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, 12 p.m., Tuesday to 6 p.m., Friday. Traffic controlled by message boards.

* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, sign work, ditch cleaning, shoulder cleaning, shoulder repair, guardrail repair and brush cutting. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, 12 p.m., Tuesday to 6 p.m., Friday. Traffic controlled by message boards.

Secondary Roads
* Route 673 – Sewer line installation from Route 11 to end of maintenance. Shoulder and lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is October.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, 12 p.m., Tuesday to 6 p.m., Friday. Traffic controlled by message boards.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 299.02 to 297.79, northbound and southbound – Asphalt overlay. Alternating lane closures, Monday night to Saturday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, brush cutting and Beaver Dam management. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 522, northbound and southbound – Asphalt overlay from Route 644 to the Route 17/50/522 interchange. Alternating lane closures with flagger traffic control, Sunday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 23.
* Various roads – Mowing.

Secondary Roads
* Route 671 – Gas line replacement from Route 662 to Route 664. Shoulder and lane closures, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is September.
* Various roads – Shoulder work, mowing and sweeping bridges.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, 12 p.m., Tuesday to 6 p.m., Friday. Traffic controlled by message boards.
* (NEW) Various roads – Pipe cleaning.

Secondary Roads
* Route 603 (Castleman Road) – Bridge deck replacement from 0.80 miles north of Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) to 2.50 miles east of Route 612 (Shepherds Mill Road). Road closed beginning Aug. 22 at 7 a.m. Suggested detour:  Northbound traffic use Route 7 west to route 612 north to Route 603 east. Southbound traffic use Route 612 south to Route 7 east to Route 603 north. Estimated completion is mid September.
* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, 12 p.m., Tuesday to 6 p.m., Friday. Traffic controlled by message boards.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, guardrail repair and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.
* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, 12 p.m., Tuesday to 6 p.m., Friday. Traffic controlled by message boards.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). Motorists should expect daily lane closures. Meadow Lane will be closed from Happy Creek Road to Stuart Drive. Wakeland Court should be used for access.
* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, 12 p.m., Tuesday to 6 p.m., Friday. Traffic controlled by message boards.
* (NEW) Various roads – Shoulder work, mowing and pipe replacement.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
