TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 29-SEPTEMBER 2, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and tree trimming. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound and westbound left lane closures with right shoulder closures at various locations. Wide loads up to 11-feet in width can proceed through the work zones.

Primary Roads
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Main Street (Route 60, Clifton Forge) – Smith Creek Bridge replacement project – Traffic signal work from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15 at West Ridgeway Street (Route 60/220) and Commercial Avenue. This work will take place Monday to Thursday each week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should be alert for shoulder closures on Commercial Avenue and on Business Route 60/220, which will limit parking. Bridge construction will occur from Sept. 19 to Oct. 12. Main Street closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.

Secondary Roads
* Route 677 – Grading, pipe replacement and stone placement (Parsonage Lane). Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 781 – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 2.00 miles east of the West Virginia state line to 0.10 miles west of Route 661. Shoulder closure and possible single-lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Various roads – Patching and mowing. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 39 – Mowing. Mobile operations, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 39 – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 0.91 miles east of the West Virginia state line to 1.10 miles west of Route 661. Shoulder closure and possible single-lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Route 220 – Ditch cleaning. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Mowing, pipe replacement and ditching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 41 to 56, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Mile marker 56.8, eastbound – Bridge work, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 30.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173.9 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and tree trimming. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 175 to 192, northbound and southbound – Bridge maintenance on various structures. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 191.5, northbound and southbound – Bridge work. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 30.
* Mile marker 195 to 189, southbound – Latex overlay. Alternating lane closures, Friday night to Saturday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; and Monday night to Tuesday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* (UPDATE) The southbound left lane will be closed from mile marker 198.8 to 198.6 on Aug. 30 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to remove a barrier. The northbound left lane will be closed from mile marker 198.6 to 198.8 on Aug. 31 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to remove a barrier.

Primary Roads
* Route 39 – Repair work on bridge over Maury River at Rockbridge Baths. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday. Flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Sept. 16.
* Various roads – Mowing, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

Secondary Roads
* Route 602 (Walkers Creek Road) – Bridge work at 0.05 miles south of Route 724 (Jump Mountain Road) and 1.15 miles west of Route 731 (Dutch Hollow Road). Single-lane closure, Aug. 18 to Sept. 22.
* Route 670 (Spring Valley Road) – Brush cutting.
* Route 697 (Amole Hollow Road) – Bridge work from 0.05 mile south of Route 699 (Wesley Chapel Road) to the dead end. Road closed, Aug. 16 to Sept. 8. Single-lane traffic detour in place. Traffic controlled with a stop and proceed sign.
* Various roads – Surface treatment, pothole repairs, grading and mowing. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed. Estimated completion is October 2012.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 600 U – Brush control from Route 84 to 7-miles in. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.
* (NEW) Route 606 – Plant mix and spot leveling. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 615 – Brush control from Route 678 to Route 250. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.
* (NEW) Route 618 – Brush control from Route 614 to dead end. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.
* Route 615 (Davis Run Road) – Rural rustic project. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 620 – Brush control from Route 614 to West Virginia state line. Krenite S application will occur Sept. 12 to 23.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* (NEW) Mile marker 87.6 to 96.7, eastbound – Installation of snow plow markers. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Friday night to Saturday morning, 7 p.m. to 9 a.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.1 to 237, northbound and southbound – Cleaning under guardrail, debris and tree removal. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Mile marker 205.58 to 209.85, southbound – Paving work. Paving complete. Installation of rumble strips, pavement markers and guardrail will require a lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of miscellaneous activities is Oct. 16.
* Mile marker 209 to 228, northbound and southbound – Bridge deck maintenance on various structures. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 210.4 to 210.7 – Repair of bridges over Route 675. Lane closures, Monday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 23.
* Mile marker 212.2 to 211.9 – Repair bridges over Route 662. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. Mid-June to September, there will be nighttime single-lane closures I-81 southbound between exit 217 and exit 213, Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. Under-drain installation and asphalt placement will occur from mile marker 218 to 214, southbound. Alternating lane and shoulder closures, Sunday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of under-drain and asphalt work is Sept. 30.
* Mile marker 219.3 to 219.6, northbound and southbound – Repair of bridges over Folly Mills Creek. Lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Thursday. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* Mile marker 233 to 235, northbound and southbound – Inspection of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Single-lane closure, Aug. 29, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 608 (Long Meadow Road) – Asphalt paving from Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) to Route 1390 (Emerald Hills Drive). Road closed, Aug. 30. 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Detour posted. Single-lane traffic, Aug. 31 to Sept. 2, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by flaggers and pilot truck.
* (NEW) Route 608 (Cold Springs Road) – Milling curb relief preparation for asphalt overlay at intersection of Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike). Single-lane traffic, Monday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 610 – Shoulder reconditioning from Route 644 to Route 633. Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control, daily, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 2.
* (NEW) Route 642 (Mule Academy Road) – Milling curb relief preparation for asphalt overlay from Route 285 (Tinkling Springs Road) to Route 250 (Jefferson Highway). Single-lane traffic, Monday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Route 652 (University Farm Road) – Roadway upgrades from Route 340 to Route 657 (Indian Ridge Road). Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 698 (Wise Hollow Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 690 (Summit Church Road to the Rockingham County line. Road closed, Aug. 29 to Sept. 12. Detour posted.
* Route 716 – Road reconstruction, widening and pipe installation from Route 629 to Route 250. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion is early October.
* (NEW) Route 862 (Furnace Road) – Roadway upgrades and rural rustic work from Route 601 (Estaline Valley Road) and end of state maintenance. Intermittent lane closures.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris and litter removal. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 238 to 248, northbound and southbound – Bridge deck maintenance on various structures. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 239, northbound and southbound – Painting bridges over North River. Alternating lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Friday night to Sunday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; and Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late September.
* (NEW) Mile marker 244.5 to 236.9, southbound – Installation of pavement markers. Right lane closed, Monday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road), eastbound and westbound – Paving from 0.20 miles east of Route 612 north (Brocks Gap) to intersection of Route 921 (Lairs Run Road) and Route 259. Single-lane traffic, Aug. 25 to Aug. 30. Mobile lane closure for pavement marking work, Aug. 25 and 26. Stone shoulder work, Aug. 29 to Sept. 1. Work zone lane closures active daily, 7a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by signs, flaggers and pilot truck. Estimated completion is Sept. 2.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

Secondary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 826 (Criders Road) – Pipe installation from Route 865 (Dovesville Road) and 1.25 miles west of Route 865. Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control, beginning Aug. 8.
* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent single lane closures with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is Oct. 31.
* Route 1417 (East Avenue) – Gas line installation. Intermittent lane closures.
* Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Bridge work from Route 42 (Harpine Highway) to Route 1415 (Early Road). Intermittent lane and bridge closures. Work estimated to begin on July 18.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* (NEW) Route 211, westbound – Pavement overlay from 0.20 miles west of Route 611 to beginning of the divided highway. Single-lane traffic, Aug. 30 and Sept. 1, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* (NEW) Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching operations and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

Secondary Roads
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011.
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, sign work, ditch cleaning, shoulder cleaning, shoulder repair, guardrail repair and brush cutting. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Various roads – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic controlled by message boards or flaggers.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing.

Secondary Roads
* Route 601 (Battlefield Road) – Work on bridge over Tumbling Run at 0.15 miles west of Route 757 in the Fishers Hill area. Road closed beginning Aug. 1. Detour posted. Estimated completion is early September.
* Route 673 – Sewer line installation from Route 11 to end of maintenance. Shoulder and lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is October.
* (NEW) Various roads – Shoulder work and mowing.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 299.02 to 297.79, northbound and southbound – Asphalt overlay. Alternating lane closures, Monday night to Saturday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 9.
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and Beaver Dam management. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 303.83 to 298.78, southbound – Modified latex overlay. Alternating lane closures, Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; and Friday night to Sunday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Estimated completion is late August.

Primary Roads
* Route 522, northbound and southbound – Asphalt overlay from Route 644 to the Route 17/50/522 interchange. Alternating lane closures with flagger traffic control, Sunday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is Sept. 23.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing and sweeping.

Secondary Roads
* Route 671 – Gas line replacement from Route 662 to Route 664. Shoulder and lane closures, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is September.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing and pipe cleaning.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing.

Secondary Roads
* Route 603 (Castleman Road) – Bridge deck replacement from 0.80 miles north of Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) to 2.50 miles east of Route 612 (Shepherds Mill Road). Road closed beginning Aug. 22 at 7 a.m. Suggested detour:  Northbound traffic use Route 7 west to route 612 north to Route 603 east. Southbound traffic use Route 612 south to Route 7 east to Route 603 north. Estimated completion is mid September.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, guardrail repair and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). Motorists should expect daily lane closures. Meadow Lane will be closed from Happy Creek Road to Stuart Drive. Wakeland Court should be used for access.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing and pipe cleaning.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
