TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF JULY 11-15, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound left lane closed with traffic shifts to left lane from mile marker 18.8 to 21 for paving. Westbound left lane closed with various traffic shifts to the left lane for shoulder closures. Wide loads up to 11-feet in width can proceed through the eastbound and westbound work zone lane shifts.

Primary Roads
* Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 159 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* (NEW) Various roads – Pipe installation, patching and weeding around guardrail at intersections. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 39 – Patching at various locations. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Ditching and patching. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 41 to 56, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (UPDATE) All northbound lanes will be closed 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on July 12 and 13. Traffic will be detoured at exit 195, traveling north on Route 11, west on Route 710 and re-entering I-81 at exit 200. This closure will be for demolition of the Route 712 Bridge. Blasting will occur on July 12 and 13 at 12 p.m. The blasting locations will be on I-81 between mile markers 200 to 202. Signs are posted in this area. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 252 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Grading, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, pipe cleaning, ditch work and mowing. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 250 – Replacement of bridge over Crab Run in McDowell, from 0.01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.014 miles west of Route 654 (Doe Hill Road). Single-lane traffic with 14-foot width restriction and three-way traffic signal at Route 250 and intersection of Route 654. Flagger traffic control at various locations when needed.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 607 (Big Valley Road) – Cattle-guard replacement. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 654 (Doe Hill Road) – Plant mix repairs from Route 250 to the West Virginia state line. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* (NEW) Mile marker 87.7 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Litter and debris removal, brush cutting, guardrail repair and sign work, Monday to Friday.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. Mid-June to September, there will be nighttime single lane closures I-81 southbound between exit 217 and exit 213, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. Under-drain installation will occur from mile marker 218 to 214, southbound. Right lane and shoulder closed, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion of under-drain work is Sept. 1.
* (NEW) Mile marker 220 to 225, northbound and southbound – Bridge beam maintenance on various structures. Single-lane closures, weeknights, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 11 (Greenville area) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 250 – Pipe cleaning. Intermittent right-lane closures.
* Route 250 (Fishersville area) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 256 – Shoulder work from Route 276 (Keezletown Road to Route 847 (Valley Church Road). Shoulder closures July 5 to 18.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Route 340 (Stuarts Draft area) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 610 – Shoulder reconditioning from Route 664 to Route 633. Intermittent lane closures, Wednesday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Route 652 (Gutherie Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 608 to Route 651. Road closed to thru traffic, 8 a.m., Aug. 1 to 5 p.m., Aug. 16. Detour posted.
* Route 971 (Libscomb Road) – Patching. Intermittent lane closures between Route 970 (Hall School Road) and Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road). Work is June 13 to July 14 from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Route 796 (Kiddsville Road) – Bridge replacement. Road closed to thru traffic beginning on July 14 at 8 a.m. until July 27 at 5 p.m. Detour posted.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, mowing and cleaning shoulders. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 239, northbound and southbound – Painting bridges over North River. Alternating lane closures, Monday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.; Friday night to Sunday morning, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.; and Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* (NEW) Route 42 – Paving from Bridgewater town limits to Harrisonburg town limits.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from 0.22 mile west of Route 704 (Boyers Road) to 0.02 mile east of Harrisonburg City limits. All lanes open to traffic but expect intermittent daytime single lane closures as construction work continues.

Secondary Roads
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent single lane closures with flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Route 1421 (Springbrook Road) – Bridge work from Route 42 (Harpine Highway) to Route 1415 (Early Road). Intermittent lane and bridge closures. Work estimated to begin on July 18.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Surface treatment. Traffic controlled by lane closures, pilot truck and flagmen. Weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011.
* (NEW) Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, vegetation management, mowing, shoulder cleaning and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 269.1 northbound and southbound – Bridge work on bridge over North Fork of the Shenandoah River. Single lane closure, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday to Thursday. Left lane closed Monday and Tuesday night.
* Mile marker 275 to 283, northbound – Paving. Alternating lane closures, Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is mid July.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 – Bridge sweeping in Toms Brooks area.
* Route 11 (Woodstock area) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 42 – Bridge sweeping in Toms Brooks area.
* (NEW) Route 42 – Concrete overlay on bridge over I-81. One lane closed, 2 p.m., July 16 to 5 a.m., July 18. Traffic controlled by police. Signs posted. Estimated completion is Aug. 1.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing behind guardrail.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 629 (Oranda Road) – Sinkhole repair from Route 660 to Route 630. Single-lane traffic, 7 a.m., Monday to 5 p.m., Friday. Flagger traffic control.
* Route 651 – Maintenance work on bridge over I-81 at exit 291, Toms Brook. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Route 673 – Sewer line installation from Route 11 to end of maintenance. Shoulder and lane closures, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is October.
* Route 678 – Bridge deck replacement located 0.03 miles north of Route 774. Intermittent lane closures and shoulder closures. Beginning June 27 there will be single lane closures 24-hours a day. Temporary signals will control traffic. Completion is mid-August.
* (NEW) Route 691 (Swover Creek Road) – Pipe culvert rehabilitation from 1.70 miles east of Route 42 to 0.80 miles west of Route 694. Possible shoulder closures and single-lane traffic with flaggers, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
* (NEW) Various roads – Brush cutting, mowing behind guardrail, scraping, bridge sweeping and shoulder work.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, shoulder and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 50 (Northwest Pike) westbound in Roundhill area – Turn lane installation. Work is from Route 803 (Round Hill Road) to Route 654 (Poorhouse Road), Width restriction of 12 feet from June 27 at 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion is late July.
* Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) – New traffic signal activation at intersection of Route 756 (Macedonia Church Road). Signal will be put into flash mode on July 11. Full signal operations are scheduled to begin on July 13. Motorists should drive with caution through this area as drivers become familiar with this new traffic pattern.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing behind guardrail.

Secondary Roads
* Route 671 – Gas line replacement from Route 662 to Route 664. Shoulder and lane closures, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is September.
* (NEW) Various roads – Pipe cleaning, shoulder work and brush cutting.
* (NEW) Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
No lane closures reported.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 723 (East Main Street), eastbound – Bridge deck replacement and footer repairs 1.30 miles east of Route 340. Road closed beginning 6 a.m. on July 11. Suggested detour:  Eastbound traffic use Route 340 (North Greenway Avenue) north to Route 255 (Bishop Meade Road) south to Route 723. Westbound traffic use Route 255 north to Route 340 south to Route 723. Estimated completion is early August.
* (NEW) Various roads – Patching and brush cutting.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, vegetation management, mowing, and shoulder work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 6 to 15, eastbound and westbound – Bridge repairs on various structures. Possible single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 6, eastbound and westbound – Bridge painting over Crooked Run. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Lane closures when necessary. Estimated completion is late July.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and sign work, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.
* Route 522 – Slide repair at Route 604 (Harmony Hollow Road). Lane closures, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. Shoulder closures 24 hours-a-day beginning March 14. Estimated completion is late July.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). A portion of Happy Creek Road will be restricted to single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals to facilitate excavation work. The location of the signals will be 430-feet west of Meadow Lane to approximately 280-feet east of Wakeland Court. The signals will control traffic 24-hours-a-day. Meadow Lane will be closed from Happy Creek Road to Stuart Drive. Wakeland Court should be used for access.
* (NEW) Various roads – Scraping and pipe cleaning.
 

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
