TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF JULY 4-8, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound left lane closed with traffic shifts to left lane from mile marker 18.8 to 21 for paving. Westbound left lane closed with various traffic shifts to the left lane for shoulder closures. Wide loads up to 11-feet in width can proceed through the eastbound and westbound work zone lane shifts.
* (NEW) Various locations – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Tuesday, 12 p.m. to Friday, 6 p.m. Signs posted.

Primary Roads
* Route 60 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Various roads – Mowing and patching, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mowing is a mobile operation and patching has flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 220, southbound – Fence repair south of Hot Springs. Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Mowing and patching. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 41 to 56, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Various locations – Bridge cleaning, litter and debris removal. Single-lane traffic, Tuesday, 12 p.m. to Friday, 6 p.m. Signs posted.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (UPDATE) All southbound lanes will be closed 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on July 5, 6 and 7. Traffic will be detoured at exit 200, traveling east on Route 710, south on Route 11 and re-entering I-81 at exit 195. This closure will be for demolition of the Route 712 Bridge. Blasting will occur on July 6 at 12 p.m. The blasting locations will be on I-81 between mile-markers 201 to 202. Signs are posted in this area. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Mowing, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Grading, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, litter pick-up and mowing. Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 220 – Paving repairs and spot leveling, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
* Route 250 (McDowell area) – Shoulder repairs. Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
* Route 250 – Bridge construction from .01 mile east of Route 645 to 0.14 miles west of Route 654. Signal work at Route 654. Single lane traffic begins on June 27 and ends on July 3. Periodic flagger traffic control.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 614 (Cowpasture River Road – South) – Road work. Single lane closure with flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Route 614 – Plant mix repairs and spot leveling. Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
No lane closures reported.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. Mid-June to September, there will be nighttime single lane closures I-81 southbound between exit 217 and exit 213. No work the week from July 4-10.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 11 (Greenville area) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 250 – Pipe cleaning. Intermittent right-lane closures.
* Route 250 (Fishersville area) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 256 – Shoulder work from Route 276 (Keezletown Road to Route 847 (Valley Church Road). Shoulder closures July 5 to 18.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Route 340 (Stuarts Draft area) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 612 – Maintenance on bridge over Lewis Creek from 0.05 miles east of Route 790 to 0.29 miles west of Route 789. Possible single-lane traffic, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 613 (Glade Spring Road) – Bridge construction. Road closed between Route 42 and Route 754 (Badger Road). Work is June 29 to July 14. Detour will be posted.
* Route 664 – Bridge work. Bridge over South River, 0.24 mile north of Route 632. Road closed, July 7 to 10. Detour posted.
* (NEW) Route 648 – Shoulder reconditioning from Route 608 to Route 647. Intermittent single-lane closures controlled by flaggers, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Route 971 (Libscomb Road) – Patching. Intermittent lane closures between Route 970 (Hall School Road) and Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road). Work is June 13 to July 1 from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 796 (Kiddsville Road) – Bridge replacement. Road closed to thru traffic beginning on July 14 at 8 a.m. until July 27 at 5 p.m. Detour posted.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Surface treatment. Traffic controlled by lane closures, pilot truck and flagmen. Weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris, mowing and sign repair work. Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 244 to 251, northbound and southbound – Bridge inspection on the Route 253 and Route 11 bridges over I-81. Shoulders closed, Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from 0.22 mile west of Route 704 (Boyers Road) to 0.02 mile east of Harrisonburg City limits. All lanes open to traffic but expect intermittent daytime single lane closures as construction work continues.

Secondary Roads
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 865 (Gravels Road) – Dominion Virginia Power line installation. Work is from Route 753 (Kratzer Road) to Route 720 (Irish Path). Intermittent single lane closures with flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Surface treatment. Traffic controlled by lane closures, pilot truck and flagmen. Weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris and litter removal, vegetation management, mowing, shoulder cleaning and sign work. Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 275 to 283, northbound – Paving. Alternating lane closures, Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is mid July.
* Mile marker 294 to 270, northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs on various structures. Single lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 in Toms Brook area – Bridge sweeping.
* (NEW) Route 11 (Toms Brook area) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 42 in Toms Brook area – Bridge sweeping.
* (NEW) Various roads – Brush cutting.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 651 – Maintenance work on bridge over I-81 at exit 291, Toms Brook. Single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* (NEW) Route 673 – Sewer line installation from Route 11 to end of maintenance. Shoulder and lane closures, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is October.
* Route 678 – Bridge deck replacement located .03 miles north of Route 774. Intermittent lane closures and shoulder closures. Beginning June 27 there will be single lane closures 24-hours a day. Temporary signals will control traffic. Completion is mid-August.
* (NEW) Route 720 – Pipe culvert work, 1.5 miles north of Route 717. Shoulder and single lane closures with flagger traffic control, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.
* (NEW) Route 770 – Pipe culvert work, 0.10 mile west of Route 678. Shoulder and single lane closures with flagger traffic control, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.
* (NEW) Various roads – Brush cutting, scraping, and shoulder work.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, mowing and sign work. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 in Winchester area – Bridge sweeping.
* (NEW) Route 50 in Winchester area – Bridge sweeping.
* Route 50 (Northwest Pike) westbound in Roundhill area – Turn lane installation. Work is from Route 803 (Round Hill Road) to Route 654 (Poorhouse Road), Width restriction of 12 feet from June 27 at 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion is late July.
* (NEW) Route 522 in Winchester area – Bridge sweeping.
* (NEW) Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) – New traffic signal activation at intersection of Route 756 (Macedonia Church Road). Signal will be put into flash mode on July 11. Full signal operations are scheduled to begin on July 13. Motorists should drive with caution through this area as drivers become familiar with this new traffic pattern.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 671 – Gas line replacement from Route 662 to Route 664. Shoulder and lane closures, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is September.
* (NEW) Various roads –Brush cutting, shoulder work, mowing and patching.

CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 255 (Boyce area) – Railroad bridge repair from Route 340 (Lord Fairfax Highway) to Route 617 (Old Chapel Road). Road width restricted to 12-feet, Monday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge sweeping.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Patching and brush cutting.


WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, ditching and sign repair. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 6 to 15, eastbound and westbound – Bridge repairs on various structures. Possible single-lane closures, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.
* Mile marker 6, eastbound and westbound – Bridge painting over Crooked Run. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Lane closures when necessary. Estimated completion is late July.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.
* Route 522 – Slide repair at Route 604 (Harmony Hollow Road). Lane closures, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. Shoulder closures 24 hours-a-day beginning March 14. Estimated completion is late July.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). A portion of Happy Creek Road will be restricted to single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals to facilitate excavation work. The location of the signals will be 430-feet west of Meadow Lane to approximately 280-feet east of Wakeland Court. The signals will control traffic 24-hours-a-day. Meadow Lane will be closed from Happy Creek Road to Stuart Drive. Wakeland Court should be used for access.
* (NEW) Various roads – Scraping, pipe cleaning and brush cutting.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
