TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF MAY 30-JUNE 3, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Eastbound shoulder closed. Eastbound and westbound temporary traffic shift to left lane at various pipe crossings. Wide loads up to 11-feet in width can proceed through the eastbound and westbound work zone lane shifts. Removal of temporary concrete barrier from mile marker 18.8 to 21 beginning May 17. Traffic will be traveling in the right lanes throughout this area until removal is complete. This is between exit 16 at Route 60/220 at the Mallow Mall area and exit 21 at Route 696 in Low Moor and Selma.

Primary Roads
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* (NEW) Route 220 – Tree trimming from Route 159 to West Virginia state line. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing and vegetation management, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mobile operation.

Secondary Roads
* Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) – Box culvert replacement at Karnes Creek. The 10-foot roadway width restriction has been lifted. Work zone will be active on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with signs and flaggers as needed. Motorists should use extreme caution in this area and watch for construction vehicles.
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.
* (NEW) Various roads – Mowing, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mobile operation.
* (NEW) Various roads – Plant mix paving, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Flagger traffic control.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 220, southbound – Fence repair south of Hot Springs. Mobile operation, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 625 (River Road) – Road closed to thru traffic 24 hours-a-day at 0.50 mile south of the intersection of Route 624 (West Minister Road) due to a fill embankment section failure. No estimate for reopening the road is available. Signs will be posted. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
* Various roads – Patching, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs and pipe cleaning. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 41 to 56, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 173.9 to 205.6, northbound and southbound – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* (UPDATE) Blasting will occur on June 1 and 2 at 12 p.m. The blasting locations will be on I-81 between mile-markers 195 to 202. Signs are posted in this area. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure.

Primary Roads
* Route 39 – Tree trimming from Route 11 to Route 252. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 60 – Tree trimming from Buena Vista City limits to Amherst County line. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 130 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 501 – Tree trimming from Route 130 to Amherst County line. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Mowing, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Grading, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, spot patching and mowing. Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

HIGHLAND COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 250 – Plant mix repairs, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 612 (Ervin Road) – Due to weather related issues the road improvement work at the Bullpasture River fording, 0.40 mile east of Route 678, will be delayed. This project will be rescheduled for late summer 2011.
* Route 614 – Plant mix repairs and spot leveling. Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 91 to 96.5, eastbound and westbound – Construction and paving activities. Eastbound lane closures, Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Westbound lane closures, Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Mile marker 91 – Boring activities in the vicinity of the I-64 and Route 285 Bridge. Expect narrow pavement on ramps and lanes, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 205.6 to 236.9, northbound and southbound – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* (UPDATE) Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. There are no 24-hour lane closures from May 27 to June 2. There will be one more planned block closure from June 3 to 9. A single closure block is scheduled to begin on Fridays at 9 p.m. and ends the following Thursday at 7 a.m. During the block closures I-81 southbound will be reduced to one lane in the work zone. Line installation work will close the right lane on Tuesday, May 31 and Wednesday, June 1 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. Friday, June 3 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., I-81 southbound between exit 217 and exit 213 will have single-lane traffic. The right lane will be closed. Drivers of tractor trailer trucks should use the left lane and drivers of passenger vehicles are requested to use the primary detour: Traffic will leave I-81 southbound at exit 217 onto Route 654 (White Hill Road) westbound to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Motorists will turn left onto Route 11 southbound and re-enter I-81 at exit 213. On Friday night, installation of reflective markers, pavement markings and barrels for the work zone will require vehicles to leave I-81 southbound at exit 217, cross Route 654 (White Hill Road) and re-enter I-81 at the mile marker 217 on-ramp. This will close Route 654 at the intersection of the I-81 exit 217 ramps. The closure is scheduled to begin on June 3 at 11 p.m. and end June 4 at 3 a.m. Suggested alternate routes to gain access to Route 654:  Eastbound traffic use Route 11 southbound to Route 340 northbound. * Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Expect a lane shift and two-way flagging operations from Route 646 (Fadley Road) to Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) for truck crossings, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 42 – Pipe replacement from Route 736 (Jennings Gap Road) to Route 728 (Stover Shop Road). Road closed to thru traffic beginning June 1. Detour posted.
* Route 250 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 256 – Paving and shoulder grading, just east of Route 11, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* Route 285/608 (Tinkling Springs Road) – Boring activities in the vicinity of the I-64 and Route 285 Bridge. Expect narrow lanes and intermittent closures. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 340 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) – Boring activities in the vicinity of the I-64 and Route 285 Bridge. Expect narrow lanes and intermittent closures. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 648 – Bridge work between Route 11 and Route 608. Single-lane traffic 24 hours-a –day. Work zone is active Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 654 (White Hill Road) – Road closed at the intersection of the I-81 exit 217 ramps for the I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project. This closure is scheduled to begin on June 3 at 11 p.m. and end June 4 at 3 a.m.
* Route 746 – Road reconstruction with flaggers controlling traffic from Route 745 to Route 616.
* (NEW) Route 780 – Maintenance on bridge over Middle River, from 0.57 miles north of Route 1916 to 0.17 miles south of Route 906. Single-lane traffic, Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* Route 800 (Folly Mills Station Road/Springfield Lane) – This closure is scheduled on June 3 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Road closed at Route 654 for the I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project. Only Route 11 intersections will be open for Route 800 traffic during I-81 lane closure period.
* Route 906 – Rural rustic project from Route 612 (Indian Ridge Road) to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Expect delays Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers during work hours. Estimated completion is May 31.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris and litter removal, mowing and shoulder work. Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from Route 11 to Port Republic Road. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail), eastbound and westbound – Turn lane installation at the intersection of Route 654 (Montevideo Circle). Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from 0.22 mile west of Route 704 (Boyers Road) to 0.02 mile east of Harrisonburg City limits. Possible lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion is January 27, 2012. Three signalized intersections have been activated at the following intersections with Port Republic Road:
o Route 280 Southeast Connector
o Pleasant View Drive
o Route 704 (Boyers Road)
Motorists are urged to drive with caution in the area of the new signals as drivers become acquainted with their operations.

Secondary Roads
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline installation from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City limits. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 211, eastbound – Work on bridge over Pass Run, 4.60 miles west of the Rappahannock County line. Road reduced to single 11-foot lane, 24 hours-a-day beginning April 6. Estimated completion is mid July.
* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, was permanently closed on May 23. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted. Estimated completion for cul-de-sac work is October 2011.
* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 263.9 to 300, northbound and southbound – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures, Sunday night to Monday morning, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 263.92 to 299, northbound and southbound – Shoulder widening and pavement marking work. Lane and shoulder closures, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late June.
* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, vegetation management, shoulder cleaning and sign work. Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 11 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 42 – Paving from Woodstock City Limits to Route 792. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Estimated completion is June 3.
* Various roads – Mowing.

Secondary Roads
* Route 609 (South Hollingsworth Road) – Swinging bridge is now open. This location is 0.20 mile east of Route 670 (East Reservoir Road).
* Route 679 – Pipe culvert work. Possible single-lane closure with flaggers, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
* Various roads – Pipe cleaning, ditching, shoulder work and scraping.
* Various roads – Surface treatment. Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated completion is mid June.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 299 to 324.21 northbound and southbound – Shoulder widening and pavement marking work. Lane and shoulder closures, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late June.
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and sign work. Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) – New traffic signal construction at intersection of Route 76 (Macedonia Church Road). Intermittent lane closures, May 2 to June 9. Work is Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
* Route 522 – Intersection improvement at Route 642 (Tasker Road) including additional turn lane and signal installations. Lane closures and lane shifts during construction. Tasker Road traffic detoured to Rainville Road and Maranto Manor Road to Route 522. Route 522 northbound will be reduced to single-lane traffic. Signs posted. Work is Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is late May.
* Various roads – Mowing.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal and shoulder work. Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Mile marker 0 to 14.5, eastbound and westbound – Vegetation management activities. Mobile lane closures, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Mile marker 6, eastbound – Bridge painting over Crooked Run. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Lane closures when necessary. Estimated completion is June 10.
* Mile marker 6, westbound – Bridge painting over Crooked Run. Right shoulder closure, 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Lane closures when necessary. Estimated completion is June 24.
* Mile marker 14.83 to 10.59, westbound – Paving. Alternating lane closures, Tuesday night to Thursday morning, 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Estimated completion is June 30.
* Mile marker 10.59 to 14.66, eastbound – Paving. Alternating lane closures, Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Estimated completion is June 30.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 (Rockland Road) at Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.
* Route 522/340 (Front Royal) – Bridge deck maintenance on bridge over South Fork Shenandoah River. Single-lane traffic, Tuesday night to Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
* Route 522 – Slide repair at Route 604 (Harmony Hollow Road). Lane closures, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. Shoulder closures 24 hours-a-day beginning March 14. Estimated completion is late June.

Secondary Roads
* Route 603 (Howellsville Road) – Box culvert installation from 0.05 mile east of Route 643. Single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals. Estimated completion is mid June.
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). A portion of Happy Creek Road will be restricted to single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals to facilitate excavation work. The location of the signals will be just west of Mary Shady Lane to approximately 430-feet east of Meadow Lane. The signals will be located at both ends of the area and at the intersection of Mary Shady Lane and Happy Creek Road. The signals will control  
traffic 24-hours-a-day. Meadow Lane will be closed from Happy Creek Road to Stuart Drive. Wakeland Court should be used for access.
* Various roads – Brush cutting, pipe cleaning, shoulder work and mowing.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
