TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF MARCH 21-25, 2011
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64  

* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Pothole repairs. Mobile lane closure, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 15 to 30, eastbound and westbound – Bridge deck maintenance. Possible single lane closure, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 29 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder repairs. Right lane closed at various locations, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Mile marker 18 to 24.5, westbound and eastbound – Median barrier construction installation project. Left lane closed. The speed limit in the work zone is 45 mph. Wide loads up to 16-feet in width can proceed through the work zone. A temporary concrete barrier has been placed in the median at mile marker 19. This is between exit 16 at Route 60/220 at the Mallow Mall area and exit 21 at Route 696 in Low Moor and Selma. This barrier will remain in place during the winter season.

 

Primary Roads

* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.

* Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Box culvert replacement at Tygers Creek. Work will affect southbound lane from 3.39 miles north of Route 159 to 0.06 mile south of Route 602 adjacent to the CSXT Railroad. One way traffic is being diverted to the northbound lane tunnel. Signs, channelizing devices and temporary traffic signals will direct traffic through the work zone. Work is weather permitting. Motorists should use extreme caution while traveling through the work zone.

 * (NEW) Various roads – Pothole repairs, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) – Box culvert replacement at Karnes Creek. Paving to begin when weather permits. The 10-foot roadway width restriction has been lifted. Work zone will be active on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with signs and flaggers as needed. Motorists should use extreme caution in this area and watch for construction vehicles.

* Route 661 (Johnson Creek) – Brush cutting, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations for I-64 median barrier project work.

* (NEW) Various roads – Pothole repairs, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

 

 

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Various roads – Pothole repairs, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mobile operation.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 676 – Bridge replacement. Road closed 24 hours-a-day.

* Various roads – Pothole repair, sweeping and brush cutting. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 41 to 56, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Mile marker 56.8, eastbound – Bridge deck maintenance on bridge over I-81 southbound. Possible single-lane closure, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* (UPDATE) Blasting will occur on March 22, 23 and 24 at 12 p.m. The blasting locations will be on I-81 between mile-markers 195 to 202. Signs are posted in this area. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure. 

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 – Bridge over I-81 at exit 175. Bridge maintenance work, single-lane traffic 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 611 (South Buffalo Road) – Bridge superstructure replacement on bridge over Buffalo Creek at 0.20 miles south of Route 612 (Blue Grass Trail). Road will be restricted to one 10-foot lane, 24 hours-a-day. Traffic controlled with stop and proceed layout. Signs posted. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes. Estimated completion is May 31.

* Various roads – Pothole repair, grading, brush cutting, litter pickup, ditching and shoulder repair. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 250 – Pipe replacement 1.60 miles east of Route 600. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Pothole repairs, brush cutting and debris removal, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flagger traffic control.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 600 – Box culvert replacement at Tributary of Back Creek, 2.30 miles from Route 84. Signs and channelizing devices to direct traffic, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A temporary bridge is used as detour. Flaggers to control traffic as needed. Work is weather permitting. Motorists should use extreme caution while traveling through the work zone.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64

Interstate 81

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 213 to 217, southbound – I-81 In-Place Pavement Recycling Project - paving. March 20 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., southbound left lane closed from exit 220 to exit 217. March 21 to March 23 from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m., southbound left shoulder and left lane closed, with rain date March 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. Right southbound lane closed, March 25, 9 p.m. to March 31, 7 a.m. Work zone lane closures: tractor trailer trucks will stay on I-81 traveling in the left lane through the single-lane work zone. Passenger vehicles will turn right off of I-81 onto the primary detour. Traffic will leave I-81 southbound at exit 217 onto Route 654 (White Hill Road) westbound to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Motorists will turn left onto Route 11 southbound and re-enter I-81 at exit 213.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) – Traffic signal reconstruction at Route 608 (Tinkling Spring Road/Draft Avenue). Intermittent lanes closures, Monday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion is March 31.

* Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) – Traffic signal reconstruction at Route 649 (Augusta Farm Road/Locust Grove Lane). Intermittent lanes closures, Monday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion is March 31.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 608 (Cold Springs Road) – Bridge widening at Route 842 (Horseshoe Circle). Loop closed 8 a.m., April 4 to 5 p.m., April 14. Detour posted.

* Route 664 – Back Creek Bridge. Bridge work 3.00 miles south of Route 610. Single-lane traffic with 10-foot width restriction, 24 hours-a-day. Traffic controlled by temporary signals. Estimated completion is Apr. 15.

* Route 746 – Road reconstruction with flaggers controlling traffic from Route 745 to Route 616. Estimated completion is Apr. 1.

* Route 906 – Rural rustic project from Route 612 (Indian Ridge Road) to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Expect delays Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic will be controlled with flaggers during work hours. Estimated completion is May 31.

* Route 971 (Lipscomb Road) – Bridge superstructure replacement on South River Bridge, 0.50 mile north of intersection of Route 624 and Route 970. Road closed. Detour signs posted. Estimated completion is March 25.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 237.51 to 263.9, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and sign work. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

 

Primary Roads

* Stone Spring Road – Erickson Avenue/Stone Spring Road Connector Project from the Route 11 intersection to the Port Republic Road intersection. Lane and shoulder closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2013.

* Route 11 (North Valley Pike) – Traffic signal reconstruction at I-81 southbound on-ramp/Route 259 (Mayland Road). Intermittent lane closures Feb. 17 to March 31. Work is Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from Route 704 (Boyers Road) to Harrisonburg City limits. All work is subject to change and weather permitting.

* Route 257, westbound (Town of Dayton) – Waterline installation from Route 1225 (Stonecroft Drive) to Route 737 (Limestone Lane). Intermittent lane closures, weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads 

* Route 631 – Little Dry River Bridge. Bridge replacement work 0.50 mile west of Route 818 (Little Dry River Road). Paving and guardrail work. Traffic routed onto new structure. Estimated completion is mid April. Traffic controlled by flaggers, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work at the intersection of Route 33 (Rawley Pike). Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 800 (Long Meadow Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (Lone Pine Road) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.

* Route 800 (American Legion Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 801 (Holsinger Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.

* Route 801 (Holsinger Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (American Legion Drive) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.

* Route 890 (Buckley Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 619 (Piney Woods Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.

 

 

PAGE COUNTY

Primary Road

* (NEW) Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 2.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph. Estimated completion is fall 2013.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 340 – Bridge deck maintenance on bridge over South Fork Shenandoah River from 0.01 mile north of Route 650 to 0.10 mile south of Route 613. Single-lane closures, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* Various roads – Pipe installation, patching, brush cutting, shoulder repairs, ditching and grading. Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 263.9 to 298, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and sign work. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

 

Primary Roads

Secondary Roads

* Route 609 (South Hollingsworth Road) – Swinging bridge is closed and removed until further notice. This location is 0.20 mile east of Route 670 (East Reservoir Road). Signs and barricades will be located, closing bridge to all pedestrian traffic.

* Route 758 (Woodstock Tower Road) – Pipe replacement from 0.25 mile east of Route 845 to 1.60 miles west of Route 770. Road closed beginning March 14. Estimated completion is late March.

 

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and sign work. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

 

Primary Roads

* Route 522 – Intersection improvement at Route 642 (Tasker Road) including additional turn lane and signal installations. Lane closures and lane shifts during construction. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is spring 2011.

* Mile marker 298 to 300, northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 340/522 – Alignment of Route 658 at intersection of Route 340/522. Construction will include additional turn lanes and traffic signals. Lane and shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Blasting operations with flagger traffic control, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion is summer 2012.

* Route 522 – Slide repair at Route 604 (Harmony Hollow Road). Lane closures, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. Shoulder closures 24 hours-a-day beginning March 14. Work scheduled for completion in late March.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). A portion of Happy Creek Road will be restricted to single-lane traffic controlled by temporary signals to facilitate excavation work. The location of the signals will be just west of Mary Shady Lane to approximately 430-feet east of Meadow Lane. The signals will be located at both ends of the area and at the intersection of Mary Shady Lane and Happy Creek Road. The signals will control traffic 24-hours-a-day and are anticipated to remain until April 30.

 

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

 

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
