TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF JULY 12-16, 2010
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 12.9, westbound – Slope work, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Right lane closed .
* Mile marker 19 to 21.5, westbound and eastbound – Left lane closure, June 14 to July 17. Median barrier construction installation project.
* Mile marker 20 to 23, westbound – Right shoulder closure, June 14 to July 17. Median barrier project work.
* Mile marker 30.9, eastbound – Slope work, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Right lane closed.
* Mile marker 39.3, eastbound – Slope work, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Right lane closed.
* Mile marker 40, westbound – Slope work, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Right lane closed.

Primary Roads
* Route F-205 (Irvine Farm Road) – Flagging operations June 14 to July 17 for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Route 220 – Bridge maintenance at the bridge over CSX Railway and Jackson River from 0.90 mile north of Route 1706 to 0.35 mile south of Route 60. Possible single-lane traffic from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Bridge repairs at bridge over Miller Branch from 1.50 miles west of Route 159 to 1.90 miles east of Route 602. Single-lane closures with 10-foot lane width restrictions controlled by stop and proceed. Motorists must stop to ensure way is clear before proceeding across the bridge. Intermittent delays up to 15-minutes. Estimated completion is Aug. 9.
* Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Bridge repairs at Tygers Creek located 2.3 miles west of Route 159 to 1.2 miles east of Route 602. Single-lane closures with 10-foot lane width restrictions controlled by stop and proceed. Motorists must stop to ensure way is clear before proceeding across the bridge. Intermittent delays up to 15-minutes. Estimated completion is July 12.

Secondary Roads
* Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) – Box culvert replacement at Karnes Creek. Single-lane traffic with stop and proceed sign. Roadway is restricted to a 10-foot width. Single-lane traffic will be in place 24 hours-a-day until mid-October. Work zone will be active on weekdays from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Motorists should use extreme caution in this area and watch for construction vehicles.
* Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) – Flagging operations June 14 to July 17 for I-64 median barrier project work.
* Route 1011 – Bridge replacement in Selma area between Route 1002 and Route 1003. Road will be closed Monday to Thursday. Detour signs in place.
* Various roads – Mowing around guardrail, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

BATH COUNTY
Primary Roads
* Route 39 – Ditch repair from West Virginia State line to Route 601. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Patching. Single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
Interstate 64
* Mile marker 41 to 56 eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 54.1, eastbound – Bridge deck maintenance at the bridge over Maury River and Kerr’s Creek. Possible single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Interstate 81
* (NEW) Mile marker 173 to 205 eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound and southbound – Blasting operations will take place approximately two days a week between the hours of noon and 2 p.m. Monday to Friday. Both northbound and southbound lanes will have a rolling mobile lane closure. The July 15 blasting operations will take place at 1 p.m. in the vicinity of the Route 712 Bridge. Signs posted. Blasting operations are estimated to continue through November.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 39 – Tractor mowing, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. New traffic pattern. Periodic single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 am to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Estimated completion is September 2010.
* (NEW) Route 252 – Tractor mowing, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 501 – Bridge maintenance at the bridge over Belle Creek from 2.45 miles north of Route 663 to 1.00 mile south of Route 792. Possible single-lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* (NEW) Route 603 – Bridges over Irish Creek. Sign installation and bridge work from 1.40 miles east of Route 608 and 5.45 miles east of Route 608. Shoulder closed, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.
* (NEW) Route 611 (South Buffalo Road) – Bridge replacement. Road closed from 1.15 miles south of Route 738 (Rapps Mill Road) to 0.25 mile north of Route 661 (Spring Branch Road). Single-lane traffic restrictions controlled by stop and proceed. Motorists must stop to ensure way is clear before proceeding. Lane will be restricted 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week, beginning July 12. Estimated completion is Sept. 24.
* Route 631 – Bridge maintenance, bridge over Mill Creek from 0.01 mile east of Route 763 to 1.15 miles west of Route 705. Possible single lane traffic, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 663 – Brush cutting with flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Various roads – Grading, patching, shoulder repair and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* (NEW) Various roads – Right-of-way and guardrail mowing. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 11 northbound and southbound – Paving from Route 781 to Route 616. Temporary lane closures with flagger traffic control, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
* Route 42 – Mossy Creek project. Roadway relocation and bridge replacement with box culvert. Work will occur from 0.63 mile south of Rockingham County line to 0.90 mile south of Rockingham County line. Expect minor delays Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Two lanes of roadway will be maintained.
* Churchville Avenue (Route 250, Staunton), eastbound – Road reconstruction activities. North Central Avenue is open to traffic. No left turn will be allowed from Churchville Avenue onto North Lewis Street. North Lewis Street is open to northbound traffic only. The eastbound lane will be closed from North Augusta Street (Route 11) to Albemarle Avenue 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The pedestrian detour is from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street. Signs are posted.
Expect intermittent delays from North Augusta Street to Albemarle Avenue due to utility installation work. Intermittent flagger traffic control for work in westbound lane. Speed limit in the project area reduced to 25 miles-per-hour. Four recommended detours for eastbound Churchville Avenue traffic heading into Staunton business district from Route 262/Route 250 interchange are to North Augusta Street:
• Take Route 250 and turn right onto Grubert Avenue and then turning left onto West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
• Take Route 250 and turn right onto Thornrose Avenue and then turning left on to West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
• Take Churchville Avenue and turn left onto Springhill Road to Route 262. Turn right onto Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
• At the Route 262/Route 250 interchange – take Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
* Route 340 (Waynesboro) –Delphine Avenue project. Clean up work at construction site. Be alert for slow moving vehicles and clean-up activities. All lanes are open.

Secondary Roads
* Route 694 (Chestnut Ridge Road) – Rustic road construction from Route 695 (Arborhill Road) to Route 693 (Bethel Green Road). Road closed 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Thursday. Estimated completion is July 22.
* Route 694 (Swartzel Shop Road) – Bridge replacement at Christians Creek tributary from Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) to Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway). Road closed with detour. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 778 (Knightly Mill Road) – Bridge replacement from Route 775 to Route 773. Road closed 8 a.m., July 12 to 5 p.m., July 30.
* Route 907 – Bridge over Christians Creek is closed. No reopening date has been scheduled.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 237.51 to 263 northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Mile marker 242.15 to 252.50, northbound and southbound – Median barrier project. Remove and replace existing median guardrail with high tension cable median barrier. Temporary lane closures 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and temporary shoulder closures 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Thursday to remove and replace existing guardrail.
* Mile marker 263.9 to 237, southbound – Sign repairs at ramps, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Mile marker 259 to 258, southbound – Ditch cleaning, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Primary Roads
* Route 42 (Forestville Road, Timberville) – Signal upgrade construction at intersection of Route 800 (Co-op Drive). Estimated completion is mid August.
* Route 42 (Warm Springs Pike) – Aerial and buried optic cable work from Bridgewater Town limits and Route 42 south to Augusta County line. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* (NEW) Route 252 (Port Republic Road) – The Southeast Connector Road between Port Republic Road and the new Reservoir Street entrance to Rockingham Memorial Hospital will be open to traffic after 2 p.m., July 13. Motorists entering the hospital complex from Port Republic Road will do so just east of the current Reservoir and Port Republic Road intersection. A temporary traffic signal has been placed at the new intersection of Port Republic Road and the Southeast Connector. The old Reservoir Street intersection at Port Republic Road will close on July 13. The traffic signal at this location will remain until construction is complete, serving traffic on Ridgedale Road and Port Republic Road. Motorists using Reservoir Street to access Port Republic Road will turn right at new signal located at the Reservoir Street hospital entrance. This signal went into flash mode on July 6. Once on the new South East Connector Road motorists will proceed to Port Republic Road.
* Route 252 (Port Republic Road) - Box culvert installation work on the Port Republic Road widening project in Rockingham County will produce lane closures later this week. The work zone is located 0.25-mile north of Boyers Road to 0.5-mile south of Reservoir Road. Expect lane closures with flagger traffic control.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Aerial and buried optic cable work from Route 825 (South River Road) to Route 655 (Lawyer Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from Route 704 (Boyers Road) to Harrisonburg City limits. Various utility installations; be alert for possible lane closures, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Secondary Roads
* Route 619 (Piney Woods Road) – Waterline installation from 1.3 miles northeast of Route 890 (Buckley Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion is July 9.
* Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Entrance, utility and medial installation work from Route 950 (Walton Way) to I-81 Interchange. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Route 726. Intermittent lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Route 800 (Long Meadow Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (Lone Pine Road) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 800 (American Legion Drive) – Columbia Gas work from Route 801 (Holsinger Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 801 (Holsinger Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 800 (American Legion Drive) to Route 619 (Wampler Road). Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* Route 820 (Bergton Road) – Motorists should be alert for travel delays of up to 20 minutes for road construction and slope work. Work zone is 1.10 miles to 0.30 mile west of Route 259. Single-lane closures with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday during daylight hours as needed. Blasting operations will also occur Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Friday. Delays up to one hour should be expected during these times. Completion is November 2010.
* Route 890 (Buckley Road) – Columbia Gas work from Route 619 (Piney Woods Road) to end of state maintenance. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Intermittent lane and shoulder closure with flagger traffic control.
* (NEW) Various roads – Paving. Traffic controlled by lane closures, pilot truck and flaggers.

PAGE COUNTY
Primary Road
* Route 211 Bypass, westbound – Paving from Route 735 to 0.17 mile east of Luray City limits. Alternating lane closures during daylight hours. Estimated completion is July 16.

Secondary Roads
* Route 602 – Pavement marking work from Route 340 to Route 692, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Slow moving equipment and delays should be expected in work zone.
* Route 622 – Pavement marking work from Route 638 to Route 340, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Slow moving equipment and delays should be expected in work zone.

* (NEW) Route 211 – Utility work from Rockingham County line to Route 728. Shoulder closed, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Secondary Roads
* Route 744 (Deer Rapids) – Bridge over Shenandoah River. Bridge work from 0.30-mile east of Route 648 to 0.45-mile east of Route 648. Traffic controlled by flaggers as needed during daylight hours, Monday to Friday. Estimated completion is April 14, 2011.

FREDERICK COUNTY
Interstate 81
* Mile marker 299 to 301.7, northbound – Sealing rumble strips and marker upgrade installation. Alternating lane closures, Sunday to Thursday 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion is July 30.
* Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and trimming, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads
* (NEW) Route 7 (Berryville Pike) eastbound and westbound – Paving from the I-81 ramps at mile marker 315 to Winchester City limits. Alternating lane closures, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Wednesday night to Thursday morning.
* Route 11 at Route 37, Kernstown area – Traffic signal and turn lane installation. Single-lane traffic with twelve-foot width restriction beginning June 1. Estimated completion is late July.
* (NEW) Route 17 westbound – Bridge repairs at bridge over Opequon Creek. Single-lane traffic, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday.

* Route 50, westbound – Paving from Route 803 to Route 614. Alternating lane closures, Sunday to Thursday, 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. Estimated completion is July 16.
* (NEW) Route 522 northbound – Paving from Winchester City limits to Route 746. Alternating lane closures, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday to Friday. Estimated completion is July 30.
* (NEW) Route 522 southbound – Paving from Route 608 to the Route 37 interchange. Alternating lane closures, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday to Friday. Estimated completion is July 30.

Secondary Roads
* Route 622 – Pavement marking work from Route 621 to Winchester City limits, nighttime operations, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Slow moving equipment and delays should be expected.
* Route 652 – Pavement marking work from Route 11 to Route 628, nighttime operations, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Slow moving equipment and delays should be expected.
* (NEW) Route 656 (Morgan’s Mill Road) – Bridge replacement from 0.25 mile north of Route 7 west. Road closed beginning July 12, 7 a.m. Estimated completion is late July. Suggested detour: Southbound traffic use Route 661 (Redbud Road) east to Route 660 (Woods Mill Road) south to Route 7 (Berryville Pike) west. Northbound traffic use Route 1612 (Morlyn Drive) east to Route 1614 (Merlot Drive) north to Route 1610 (Mackenzie Lane) east to Route 660 north to Route 661 west.
* Route 656 – Pavement marking work from Route 7 to Route 657, nighttime operations, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Slow moving equipment and delays should be expected.
* Route 659 – Pavement marking work from Route 7 west to Route 656, nighttime operations, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Slow moving equipment and delays should be expected.
* Route 671 – Back Creek Bridge, bridge repairs. Single lane traffic controlled by signs.
* Route 803 – Pavement marking work from Route 50 east to 0.5 mile west of Route 50, nighttime operations, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Slow moving equipment and delays should be expected.
* Various roads – Brush cutting and patching.

WARREN COUNTY
Interstate 66
* Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound – Debris removal and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Mile marker 6.4 to 10.4 eastbound – Sealing rumble strips and marker upgrade installation. Alternating lane closures, Sunday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Estimated completion is July 30.

Interstate 81
* Mile marker 298 to 300 northbound and southbound – Debris removal, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 55 eastbound and westbound (South Fork Bridge project) – Soil work. Shoulder closures in the vicinity of Route 340/522, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion of soil work is early August.
* (NEW) Route 340/522 northbound and southbound (South Fork Bridge project) – Soil work. Alternating lane closures between Seventeenth Street and Duck Street, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Estimated completion of soil work is early August.

Secondary Roads
* Route 1026 (Happy Creek Road) Front Royal area – Road improvement project from Sixth Street and Bradford Drive to near Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road). Temporary lane closures 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Happy Creek Road closed from Polk Avenue to Sixth Street until November 30 to reconstruct the Sixth Street intersection. Motorists should follow detour signs for alternate route.
* Various roads – Drainage work and brush cutting.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.
