TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF MARCH 29 – APRIL 2, 2010
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64  

* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, debris removal, pothole and pavement repair, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

* Various locations – Guardrail repair as needed, 7 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

 

Primary Roads                                     

* Various roads – Pothole patching and cleaning ditches. Mobile traffic operations, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Various roads – Brush and tree cutting.  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.  Work is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

*Various roads – Pothole patching and drain cleaning. Mobile traffic operations, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm.

* Various roads – Brush and tree cutting.  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.  Work is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Various roads – Pothole patching. Mobile traffic operations, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm.

* Various roads – Brush and tree cutting.  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control. Work is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, northbound and southbound– Truck climbing lane project. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Possible lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 pm to 7 am. Estimated completion fall 2012.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. New traffic pattern. Periodic single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 am to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Estimated completion is September 2010.

* (NEW) Various roads – Bridge sweeping, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 610 (Plank Road) – Road closed March 29 to April 29 for Cedar Creek Bridge replacement located 0.6-mile south of Route 692 (Cedear Creek Road) to 0.9-mile north of Route 693 (High Bridge Church Road). Detour uses Route 692 and Route 693 in Rockbridge County.  Route 692 is detour for Botetourt County.  Detour and road signs will be posted.

* Various roads – Brush and tree cutting.  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.  Work is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Various roads –Shoulder work, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ingle lane traffic with flagger traffic control.

* Various roads – Pothole patching. Mobile traffic operations, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Sweeping at intersections and on bridges, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m..  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.

* Various roads – Grading.

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64

* (NEW) Mile markers 87 to 99, eastbound and westbound – Pothole patching, Tuesday to Thursday.  Mobile work zone.

* Various locations – Ditch cleaning, litter and debris removal, pothole and pavement repair, 7 am to 7 p.m. weekdays.

* Various locations – Guardrail repair; litter removal as needed, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

 

Interstate 81

No lane closures reported.

 

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Churchville Avenue (Route 250, Staunton), eastbound – Road reconstruction activities.  North Lewis Street will be closed to southbound traffic.  No left-turn off of Churchville Avenue on to North Lewis Street.

North Central Avenue will be closed to through traffic.  Local businesses will have access to road from Pump Street to Churchville Avenue.

The eastbound lane will be closed from North Augusta Street (Route 11) to Albemarle Avenue. Eastbound lane closed 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. The pedestrian detour is from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street. Signs are posted. Expect intermittent delays from North Augusta Street to North Lewis Street due to utility installation work. Intermittent flagger traffic control for work in westbound lane. Speed limit in the project area reduced to 25 miles-per-hour. Four recommended detours for eastbound Churchville Avenue traffic heading into Staunton business district from Route 262/Route 250 interchange are to North Augusta Street:

  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Grubert Avenue and then turning left onto West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Thornrose Avenue and then turning left on to West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Churchville Avenue and turn left onto Springhill Road to Route 262.  Turn right onto Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
  • At the Route 262/Route 250 interchange – take Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection. Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.  

* (NEW) Route 252 – Patching from Route 693 to Route 682.  Traffic controlled by signs and flaggers.

* (NEW) Route 340 – Bridge over Christians Creek located  0.6-mile north of Route 655.  Bridge deck maintenance.  Single lane traffic Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 340 (Waynesboro) – Construction from Broad Street to Sixth Street for railroad bridge replacement and roadway widening. Expect delays Monday to Saturday. Seventh Street closed to through traffic from Winchester Avenue to Commerce Street. Sixth Street closed from Delphine Avenue to Commerce Street for retaining wall construction, bridge and utility work. Estimated completion is November 2011. Detours are posted.

* Various roads – Litter and debris pickup, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

* Various roads – Pothole patching. Mobile lane closures.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 907 – Bridge over Christians Creek is closed.  No reopening date has been scheduled.

* Various roads – Pothole patching, machining dirt roads. Mobile lane closures, Monday to Friday.

* Various roads – Scraping dirt roads, bridge maintenance.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

No lane closures reported.

 

Secondary Roads

* Various roads – Brush cutting and patching potholes. Traffic controlled by signs.

* Various roads – Pothole patching and stone stabilization.  Flagger traffic control.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 242.15 to 252.50, northbound and southbound – Median barrier project. Remove and replace existing median guardrail with high tension cable median barrier. Upgrade substandard guardrail along outside travel lanes. Temporary right shoulder closures during daylight hours, Monday to Friday. Temporary lane closures 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday to Thursday.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Signal light installation from Route 981 (Rockingham Pike) to Route 602 (East Point Road). Right shoulder closed, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 42 (Town of Dayton) – Waterline repair on Main Street between Route 290 (College Street) and Route 1209 (Thompson Street). Intermittent shoulder closures with flagger traffic control Monday to Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

* Route 42 (Town of Dayton) – Signal upgrade construction at Route 290 (Huffman Drive). Possible delays.

* Route 42 (Warm Springs Road) – Cable work from Bridgewater Town limits south to Augusta County line. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) Cable work from Route 825 (South River Road) to Route 655 (Lawyer Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Road widening project from Route 704 (Boyers Road) to Harrisonburg City limits.  Silt fence and water retention basin installation plus brush clearing. Be alert for possible lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Completion is Jan. 27, 2012.

* Route 340 (Eastside Highway) – Directional bore, Town of Grottoes. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads 

* Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Entrance and utility work from Route 950 (Walton Way) to I-81 Interchange. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 712 (West Mosby Road) – Overhead electrical work from Route 712 (Harrisonburg City limits) to route 701 (Pike Church Road). Shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Harrisonburg City Limits. Eastbound lane and shoulder closure, flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Waterline work at Route 1173 (Nutmeg Court). Intermittent lane closures and flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 793 (Endless Caverns Road) – Intersection upgrade from Route 11 (North Valley Pike) to Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

* (NEW) Route 820 (Bergton Road) – Road construction and slope work.  Work zone is 1.1-mile to 0.3-mile west of Route 259. Single-lane closures with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday during daylight hours.  Completion is November 2010.

* Route 867 (North River Road) – Entrance construction from Route 11 (Main Street) to Route 693 (Fairview Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 981 (Rockingham. Pike) – Turn lane installation from Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) to Route 829 (Independent Road). Right shoulder closure, intermittent detour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Work zone is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 299 northbound – Shoulder repair 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.

* (NEW) Mile marker 285 to 295, northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs at various locations.  Nighttime single lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 (Old Valley Pike, Maurertown) – Safety and drainage improvement work from just south of Diamond Valley entrance to just north of Route 654 (Zion Church Road). Drain, grade, asphalt and utilities. Daylight operations with varying lane closures. Traffic controlled by flaggers. Estimated completion is June 2010.

* (NEW) Route 263, Mount Jackson area – Brush cutting.

* (NEW) Various roads – Pothole patching, bridge sweeping.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 660 (Timberlake Road), Strasburg area – Railroad crossing work.  Road closed from Route 629 to Route 622.  Road closure is from April 1, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Detour:  Northbound traffic will use Route 629 (Oranda Road) to Route 622 (Clary Road) to Route 660 (Timberlake Road).

Southbound traffic will use Route 622 (Clary Road) to Route 629 (Oranda Road) to Route 660 (Timberlake Road).

* (NEW) Route 637 (Powhatan Road), Strasburg area – Railroad crossing work.  Road closed from Route 55 to Route 638 (Junction Road).  Road closure is from March 30 at 8 a.m. until March 31 at 5 p.m.

Detour:  Route 637 Southbound traffic use Route 55 West to Route 623 South (Back Road) to Route 638 East (Junction Road) to Route 637 (Powhatan Road).

Route 637 Northbound traffic use Route 638 West (Junction Road) to Route 623 North (Back Road) to Route 55 East to Route 637 (Powhatan Road).

* Route 744 (Deer Rapids) – Bridge over Shenandoah River. Bridge work from 0.30-mile east of Route 648 to 0.45-mile east of Route 648. Traffic controlled by flaggers as needed during daylight hours, Monday to Friday. Estimated completion is April 14, 2011.

* (NEW) Various roads – Pothole patching, pipe cleaning, soft spot repair, bridge sweeping, debris removal and ditching.

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Milemarker 300 northbound – Shoulder repair 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.

 

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 37, Winchester area – Asphalt pavement repairs.

* (NEW) Route 522, Winchester area – Asphalt pavement repairs.

* (NEW) Various roads – Pothole patching.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 661 (Wright Road) – Bridge deck work located 1.8 miles north for Route 669 (Rest Church Road).  Road closed from March 29 at 8 a.m. until mid-April 2010. 

Detour:  Northbound traffic will use Route 669 (Rest Church Road) West to Route 671 (Whitehall Road) West to Route 739 (Apple Pie Ridge Road) North to Runny Meade Road in West Virginia to Gold Miller Road East in West Virginia.

Southbound traffic will use Gold Miller Road West in West Virginia to Runny Meade Road Southwest in West Virginia to Route 739 (Apple Pie Ridge Road) South to Route 671 (Whitehall Road) East to Route 669 (Rest Church Road) East.
