STAUNTON – (2:45 p.m.) There is a large multi-vehicle accident in Shenandoah County on Interstate 81 in the southbound lanes at mile marker 275.  According to the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office there are 20 to 30 vehicles involved.  These are early estimates.  Both southbound lanes are closed in this location.  This location is between exit 277 at Bowman’s Crossing and exit 273 at Mount Jackson.

A detour has been set up taking travelers off of  I-81 at exit 279 at Edinburg , traveling south on Route 11 and rejoining the interstate at exit 273 in Mount Jackson.

On I-81 at mile marker 281 northbound there is another multi-vehicle accident involving about 10 vehicles.  Both northbound lanes are closed in this area.  Motorists will detour I-81 at exit 279 at Edinburg taking Route 11 north and rejoining I-81 at exit 283 in Woodstock.

Motorists should expect significant delays in this area.  

There is another accident on I-81 southbound in Frederick County at mile marker 319 .  This is between exit 321 at Clearbrook and exit 317 at Route 11 north of Winchester.  The right lane is closed in this area.  

All travelers should use extreme caution when driving.  All driving is not advised today unless absolutely necessary.

Motorists are reminded that ice and freezing rain conditions can still produce hazardous driving conditions, even when roads are treated.  People should not drive unless absolutely necessary.  People who are driving in winter road conditions should use extra caution particularly on bridges, overpasses, curves, hills and ramps.

Closed – Roadway is closed; impassable
Severe – Significant accumulations of snow or ice blocking the roadway; conditions are hazardous
Moderate – Snow or ice covering a major portion of the roadway; passable with caution
Minor –  Advisory, potential for icy patches or snow on roadway; passable with caution
