TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF NOVEMBER 2-6, 2009
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64  

No lane closures reported.

 

Primary Roads                                     

* (NEW) Route 42 – Various bridges, bridge repair, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.

 

Secondary Roads

* Various roads – Drainage work, patching. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lane closures controlled by flaggers. Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.

 

 

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 39 – Various bridges, bridge repair.  Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Various roads – Brush cutting and patching. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* (NEW) Various dirt roads – Grading.

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 56 to 50, westbound – Paving. Alternating lane closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Stationary traffic control.

 

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 188.3 – Pavement work, right lane closure, Monday and Tuesday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 60, eastbound and westbound – Pavement marking from Buena Vista City eastern limits to Amherst County line. Flagger traffic control and pilot truck, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* Route 130 (Glasgow) – Bridge construction at Route 501. Periodic single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, signs posted. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to noon. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Completion is in September 13, 2010.

* Route 56 – Shoulder work from Route 608 to the Nelson County line. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 614 (Little River Road) – Railroad work. Road closed from .3 mile east of Route 42 (Virginia Avenue) to 1.0 mile west of Route 601 (Millard Burke Memorial Highway).  Work is Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Brush cutting, patching and shoulder work. Single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

* Various roads – Grading dirt roads.

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 217.9 – Pavement work, right lane closure, Sunday and Monday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* Mile marker 219.1, northbound and southbound – Bridge over Route 654. Bridge painting. Alternating lane closures, Sunday to Thursday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* Mile marker 227 to 229, northbound and southbound – Bridge over Middle River. Bridge repairs. Possible shoulder closures, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Possible lane closure, Monday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 234.5 – Bridge painting.  Single lane closure, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

 

Primary Roads

* (NEW) Churchville Avenue (Route 250, Staunton), eastbound – Road reconstruction activities. Beginning Nov. 9 the eastbound lane will be closed from North Augusta Street (Route 11) to Albemarle Avenue. Eastbound lane closed 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Westbound lane open to traffic during construction. Lane closure to begin in late October or early November. Lane closure beginning date announced in the near future. Four recommended detours for eastbound Churchville Avenue traffic heading into Staunton business district from Route 262/Route 250 interchange are to North Augusta Street:

  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Grubert Avenue and then turning left onto West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Route 250 and turn right onto Thornrose Avenue and then turning left on to West Beverly Street, which intersects with North Augusta Street.
  • Take Churchville Avenue and turn left onto Springhill Road to Route 262.  Turn right onto Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection.  Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.
  • At the Route 262/Route 250 interchange – take Route 262 north to the Route 11 intersection.  Turn right onto Route 11 and take Route 11 bypass (Commerce Road) into Staunton.

* (NEW) Route 252 – Patching from Route 802 to Route 682.  Traffic control with signs and flaggers.  Monday to Friday.

* (NEW) Route 254 – Litter pick-up from Route 262 to Route 42. Traffic control with signs and flaggers.  Monday to Friday.

* Route 262 – Road work from Route 11 to Route 262, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Use extreme caution as motorists become acquainted with new traffic pattern. Estimated completion is Nov. 20.

* Route 262, westbound – Construction of acceleration lane extension from Middlebrook Avenue to Route 262. Lane closures, flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is Nov. 2009.

* (NEW) Route 276 – Street sweeping, Monday to Friday.

* Route 340 (Waynesboro) – Construction from Route 250 to Delphine Avenue for railroad bridge replacement and roadway widening. Delphine Avenue is closed to thru traffic between Main Street (Route 250) and Hopeman Parkway. Delphine Avenue is open to local traffic only between Main Street (Route 250) and Seventh Street, and between Hopeman Parkway and Sixth

Street. Detours are posted. Estimated date of road opening is January 8, 2010. Estimated completion of project is November 2011.

* (NEW) Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Advanced warning flashing signal installation, southbound near Route 612 (Crimora Mine Road).  Estimated completion is late November.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 622 – Bridge construction.  Causeway available for traffic.  Traffic controlled with signs – stop and proceed when way is clear.  Work is from Waynesboro City limits to Route 950. Monday to Friday.

* Route 693 – Patching from Route 701 to Route 662. Flagger traffic control, Wednesday to Friday.

* (NEW) Route 694 from Route 693 (Bethel Green Road) to Route 695 (Arborhill Road), road construction, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Estimated completion is Dec. 18.

* (NEW) Route 701 – Ditch cleaning, Thursday and Friday.  Flagger traffic control.

* Route 746 – Tree removal from Route 616 to Route 745. Road closed, Monday to Friday.

* Route 774, northbound and southbound (Cline River Road, New Hope) – Bridge over Middle River. Bridge replacement activities between Route 608 (Battlefield Road) and Route 775 (Craig Shop Road). Road closed from Mar. 30 to Nov. 13. Detour provided.

* Route 794 (Sangers Lane), eastbound and westbound – Bridge over Christians Creek, from Route 792 (Basley Road) to Route 642 (Barren Ridge Road). Bridge replacement. Road closed,  24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week, until Dec. 16. Detour provided.

* (NEW) Route 853 – Pipe replacement, Route 11 to dead end, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Flagger traffic control.

* Route 9026 – Ditch cleaning at Route 701. Flagger traffic control, Thursday and Friday.

* Various roads –Brush cutting. Signs posted, Monday to Friday. Flagger traffic control.

* Various roads – Mowing, machining dirt roads. Mobile operation, Monday to Friday.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Route 600 – Brush cutting, Route 84 to Route 250, Upper Back Creek area. Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 245 to 249 – Northbound and southbound, various bridges, bridge maintenance.  Single lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday night to Friday morning.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 (North Valley Pike) – VMI Cadet March, Nov. 22, 7:30 a.m. to noon. Marching route from south Rockingham County line to north Rockingham County line and entering Town of New Market.

* Route 42 (Main Street – Town of Broadway) – HalloweenFest. Road closed from Route 259 (Broadway Avenue) to Route 259 (Lee Street), Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Detour provided.

* Route 211 (New Market Road) – Cable installation from Route 960 (Water Wheel Road) to Shenandoah City limits. Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Advance warning flashing signal installation near Route 253/659 (Port Republic Road).  Estimated completion is late November.

* Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Road work from Route 33 (Rawley Pike) to Route 726 and Harrisonburg City Limits. Eastbound lane and shoulder closure, flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 726 (Erickson Avenue) – Shoulder work, intermittent lane closures.  Flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Grade/slope work from Route 11 (Main Street, Mount Crawford) to Route 696 (Kiser Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 732 (Eberly Road) – From Route 701 (Silver Lake Road) to Route 42 (Main Street, Town of Dayton). Wall repair, single lane traffic with flagger traffic control.  Work is Nov. 6 to Nov. 7.

* Route 793 (Endless Caverns Road) – Intersection upgrade from Route 11 (North Valley Pike) to Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 867 (North River Road) – Entrance construction from Route 11 (Main Street) to Route 693 (Fairview Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Route 981 (Rockingham. Pike) – Turn lane installation from Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) to Route 829 (Independent Road). Right shoulder closure, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 1204 (Ashby Street) Town of Dayton – Water line installation from Route 257 (Mason Street) to Thompson Street (Route 1209).  Single lane traffic, flagger traffic control.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 264 to 298, northbound and southbound – Bridge repairs, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday night to Friday morning.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 (Old Valley Pike, Maurertown) – Safety and drainage improvement work. Drain, grade, asphalt and utilities. Traffic controlled by flaggers. Estimated completion is June 2010.

* (NEW) Route 42 – Brush cutting.  Mount Jackson area.

* (NEW) Route 263 – Brush cutting.  Mount Jackson area.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 623 (Coal Mine Road) – Bridge deck replacement located .04 mile north of Route 55 in Wheatfield area.  Road closed beginning Monday, Nov. 2 until late November.  Detour posted.

* Route 703, eastbound and westbound – Bridge over Swover Creek. Pipe culvert work. Shoulder closure or single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work dependant on weather.

* Route T1003 (Cadet Road, New Market) – Water and sewer line work from Route 211, westbound to Route 1009 (Stuart Street). Portions of road closed to thru traffic. Estimated completion is late November.

* (NEW) Various roads – Scraping, brush cutting and patching.

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 307, northbound and southbound – Tree trimming, Monday night to Friday morning, 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Papermill Road (Winchester) – Road reconstruction from .06 mile south of Weems Lane to .28 mile north of South Pleasant Valley. Suggested alternate route: Weems Lane to Roosevelt Boulevard to Papermill Road. Monday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 11 – Shoulder work in Winchester area.
