TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF JUNE 29 – JULY 3, 2009
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
Interstate 64

Primary Roads
* Route 11, southbound (Lee Jackson Highway) – Pavement marking and guardrail installation from Route 694 to Route 701. Possible lane shift with flagger traffic control, Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
* Route 340 (Waynesboro) – Construction from Route 250 to Delphine Avenue for railroad bridge replacement and roadway widening, Tuesday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Expect minor delays from Broad Street to Sixth Street for construction work. Seventh Street closed from Winchester Avenue to Delphine Avenue, June 1 to Jan. 2010 for retaining wall construction. Estimated completion is Nov. 2011.
* Various roads – Debris cleanup.

Interstate 81

* Route 33, eastbound and westbound (Market Street) – Safety upgrade at Route 33 and I-81 interchange. Single-lane traffic with flagger traffic control, Monday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Traffic signalization work. Signal placed into full operation, between 11 p.m., June 29 to 2 a.m., June 30. After signal is in full operation, the southbound onramp to I-81 will be closed permanently and traffic will be switched to the new pattern

* Route 340 (Jeremy’s Run) – Bridge work. Work hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday. Flagger traffic control. Traffic has been rerouted to new bridge and approaches. Expect delays and use extreme caution while traveling through the work zone. The speed limit will remain 45 miles per hour throughout the project limits.

Primary Roads
* Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Traffic signal upgrade at the I-66 eastbound and westbound ramps. Motorists are urged to drive with caution in the work zone.
* Route 340/522 (North Fork Bridge project) – Bridge construction from Route 637 and Route 55 (Strasburg Road). Speed limit reduced to 25 mph. Traffic shifted from current travel lanes on east side of new bridge to new travel lanes on west side of new bridge, 7 p.m., Wednesday to 6 a.m., Thursday. Message boards in place to alert motorists of traffic switch and changes. Road construction with possible lane closures, Monday to Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Route 340/522 from Guard Hill Road to the new bridge structure. Motorists should expect delays and use extreme caution when traveling in the work zone.

Secondary Roads
* Route 609 (Ritenhour Hollow Road) – Partially collapsed pipe overflow, from Route 627 (Reliance Road) to Route 736 (Molly Campbell Lane). Road closed for undetermined amount of time. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes.
* Route 631 (William Vincent Road, Browntown) – Pipe installation, grading and paving from Route 631 to Route 613 (Browntown Road, Bentonville). Flagger traffic control, Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is June 2009.
* Route 721 (Fellows Drive) – Road reconstruction from Route 638 (Howellsville Road) to Young’s Drive. Periodic single-lane traffic, flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Various roads – Mowing, patching and grading stabilized routes, Monday to Thursday.


CLARKE COUNTY
Primary Roads
No lane closures reported.

Secondary Roads
* Various roads – Mowing, patching, asphalt leveling, grading stabilized routes. Monday to Thursday.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.
