Multi-vehicle accident closes northbound and southbound lanes and leads to backups

STAUNTON – Interstate 81, northbound and southbound at mile marker 284.7 in Shenandoah County, has back ups due to a multi-vehicle accident, including two tractor trailers. Both northbound and southbound lanes are closed. A detour has been set up at Exit 291, southbound onto Route 11 and ends at exit 283, southbound onto I-81. An additional detour has been set up at Exit 283, northbound onto Route 11 and ends at exit 291, northbound onto I-81. Motorists may want to choose alternate routes.

Officials at the scene say the lanes will remain closed for an extended period of time.

This location is between exit 291 at Route 651 (Toms Brook/Truck Stops) and exit 283 at Route 42 (Woodstock/Wal-Mart). Motorists should expect significant delays in this area.
