VDOT CREWS CLEARING ROADS ACROSS VIRGINIA AS SNOW STORM IMPACTS MUCH OF STATE
Motorists urged to avoid or limit travel particularly in southeastern Virginia

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are treating and plowing roads across much of the state this morning, as a winter storm impacts roadways mainly in the western, central and southeastern regions.  Interstate and primary roads are in either minor to moderate condition, with snow and ice covering parts of the roadway.  Neighborhood and subdivision streets have more snow cover as crews focus on keeping the major roadways cleared first.

The hardest hit areas are in southeastern Virginia - the Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads region - where road conditions are moderate to severe.  Snow or ice is on major portions of the roadway and some roads may be partially blocked. Bridges, overpasses and roadways are particularly icy.  VDOT deployed extra crews from other areas of the state to this region yesterday to assist with snow removal.

Crews will continue to work throughout the day to clear and treat roads. Snow plow drivers work first on the interstate and primary routes and continue to focus on these routes until conditions improve.  Once the precipitation stops and these major roads are plowed and treated, VDOT begins to work on neighborhood streets and secondary roads.

Motorists are urged to avoid or limit travel in snow impacted areas. Extreme cold and slick roads make for hazardous driving conditions this morning.

For the latest road conditions go to www.511Virginia.org or call 511.  Road problems can be reported to 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
