VDOT ANNOUNCES ‘E-ZPASS ON-THE-GO’ RETAILERS
AAA Mid-Atlantic, Wegmans and Giant are first to join Virginia’s ‘E-ZPass On-the-Go’ retail program
RICHMOND — Getting an E-ZPass transponder just got a whole lot easier for Virginia drivers.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) today launched “E-ZPass On-the-Go,” which will allow customers to obtain E-ZPass transponders at various locations of AAA Mid-Atlantic, Wegmans and Giant, the program’s first retail partners. Drivers can get prepaid E-ZPass transponders at select outlets of these retailers for use on all toll roads in Virginia and 13 other states.
AAA Mid-Atlantic has 13 locations in Virginia that offer “E-ZPass On-the-Go,” including Fairfax, Richmond, Lynchburg and Fredericksburg. Throughout Northern Virginia, Wegmans has six stores that offer the standard E-ZPass and E-ZPass Flex transponders through the “On-the-Go” program. Giant recently announced that 20 of its stores will participate in the program. VDOT expects to announce additional “E-ZPass On-the-Go” retail partners in Central Virginia and Hampton Roads in the fall.
“AAA Mid-Atlantic, Wegmans and Giant are trusted organizations that have multiple locations to make it easier for Virginia residents to take advantage of the ‘E-ZPass On-the-Go’ program,” said VDOT Commissioner Greg Whirley. “Their reputations and convenient locations made each of them an excellent partner in this initiative.”
E-ZPass is an electronic toll-collection system that makes paying tolls fast and easy for drivers through the use of a transponder, which automatically deducts tolls from an account that can be connected to the user’s bank or credit-card accounts.
E-ZPass Flex is a new transponder that works like a typical E-ZPass, with an additional function that permits free use of the Interstate 495 Express Lanes (Capital Beltway) in Northern Virginia for vehicles with three or more occupants.
“E-ZPass On-the-Go” provides another way for drivers to obtain an E-ZPass or an E-ZPass Flex transponder through select stores and businesses. Drivers simply pay $35, and the E-ZPass can be used immediately with a $15 toll credit. An additional $20 is available for tolls when the transponder is registered online at www.EZPassVA.com or by telephone at 877-762-7824 or 800-828-1120 (for TTY users) before or after its first use.
“AAA is pleased to provide the convenience of an added 13 retail stores across Virginia, where not only our members, but also the public-at-large, can purchase pre-loaded E-ZPass transponders for the same price that they can be obtained through VDOT. As the demand for transponders is growing and expected to soar with the addition of the new E-ZPass Flex transponder for use on the 495 Express Lanes later this year, our additional outlets will serve as an important piece of a stronger distribution network,” said Martha Mitchell Meade, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “All branches will offer the standard units, and our northern Virginia offices will offer both standard and E-ZPass Flex transponders. We believe that the convenience of being able to walk into a location closer to your home to purchase a pre-loaded transponder will be welcomed by motorists.”
Virginia joins several other “E-ZPass On-the-Go” states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and New Hampshire.
“Wegmans is excited to be a part of the launch of Virginia's ‘E-ZPass On-the-Go’ program in all six of our Virginia locations. We know that this program will be a success, based on previous experience with ‘On-the-Go’ programs in other states," says Simone Blaakman, Wegmans Continuous Improvement Support.
E-ZPass services also are available at two Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) locations at 813 Greenbrier Road in Chesapeake and 1968 Gallows Road in Vienna (near Tysons Corner). Customers can visit these DMV offices for full E-ZPass services, including account sign-up, obtaining additional transponders, payments and replacing transponders.
Flex transponders are available at the Vienna/Tysons Corner location for those customers who want to exchange their standard transponder for a Flex transponder or to add a Flex transponder to their account. Providing these services at additional DMV locations is targeted for 2013.
Transponders can also be obtained online, by calling a toll-free number or by visiting an E-ZPass Customer Service Center. For more information, visit www.EZPassVA.com.
