VDOT IS INSTALLING HIGH TENSION GUARDRAIL IN THE MEDIAN OF INTERSTATE 581 IN ROANOKE
SALEM — The Virginia Department of Transportation is installing high-tension cable guardrail in the median of Interstate 581 between Peters Creek Road and Liberty Road. Work is underway and expected to be completed by late spring and will cost approximately $900,000.
The cable guardrail is intended to prevent and lessen the severity of cross-median crashes.
The median of I-581 is relatively flat and narrow and has a history of crossover crashes. Between December 2012 and November 2017, there were 26 crossover crashes on the section of I-581 between Liberty Road and Interstate 81.
Cable guardrail works well within medians protecting both sides of the road and is more effective at halting vehicles than traditional metal guardrail.
A stone mow strip also is being installed with the high-tension barrier system to make it easier to mow around and maintain.
