TRAFFIC ALERT: FLASHING YELLOW ARROW INSTALLATION SCHEDULED AT TWO INTERSECTIONS
SALEM – Next week, two traffic signals will be fitted with flashing yellow arrows. Weather permitting, work is expected to take place at 9:30 a.m. each day at these locations:
- On Tuesday, March 1, a flashing yellow arrow for both left turns at the intersection of Route 11 and Route 1815 (La Marre Drive) in Roanoke County
- On Thursday, March 3, a flashing yellow arrow will be installed for the left turn from northbound Route 220 onto Route 779 (Catawba Road) in Botetourt County
Lane closures will be in place and police will control traffic through the intersection. Drivers are encouraged to use caution in the work zone.
Flashing yellow arrows are more effective than the more common circular green light and other signals at conveying to drivers the need to yield before turning left at permissive turns. Studies have shown that after a short learning period flashing yellow signals are better understood, better obeyed and are safer.
