TRAFFIC ALERT: INTERSTATE 81 BRIDGE REPAIRS TO REQUIRE LANE CLOSURES AND DETOUR IN BOTETOURT COUNTY

SALEM – Ongoing repairs to three Interstate 81 bridges in Botetourt County will impact traffic in the next few weeks.  Work will be performed on the bridge over the James River, the bridge over Route 625 (Mount Joy Road) and the bridge over Route 43 and the railroad tracks.

Weather permitting, the following impacts are expected:

    • Alternating lane closures may be in place on northbound and southbound I-81 between mile markers 164 and 166.  On Sunday through Thursday nights, work will be performed between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following morning.

    • For northbound I-81, three extended lane closures on the James River bridge of approximately 16 hours are planned for the week of July 10 through 16. During these longer lane closures, a single lane closure will be in place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. with a width restriction of 12 feet.  Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., northbound I-81 traffic will be detoured off I-81 onto Route 11 through the Town of Buchanan between exit 162 and exit 168.

Weather and schedule permitting, the extended lane closure and detour for northbound I-81 on the James River bridge are planned as follows:

    • Monday, July 11 from 6 p.m. until Tuesday, July 12 at 10 a.m.

    • Wednesday, July 13 from 6 p.m. until Thursday, July 14 at 10 a.m.

    • Friday, July 15 from 6 p.m. until Saturday, July 16 at 10 a.m.

These dates are schedule and weather dependent and will be rescheduled as needed.  The time frame of the extended lane closures is estimated to be approximately16 hours, but these single lane closures will remain in place until concrete sets.
