Project to improve traffic flow and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists

SALEM – The Commonwealth Transportation Board at its March 16 meeting in Richmond awarded a contract worth approximately $12 million to Roanoke-based contractor E.C. Pace Company for a project to improve traffic flow and safety for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists along a 0.78-mile section of 10th Street in Roanoke.

Work on the project will include reconstructing the two travel lanes and providing bicycle lanes, curb and gutter, and sidewalks from just south of Fairfax Avenue to just north of Andrews Road.

Turn lanes will be added on 10th Street at its intersections with Grayson Avenue and Orange Avenue, and left-turn lanes will be added to Orange Avenue at the 10th Street intersection.  A new concrete arch structure also will be installed to carry 10th Street over Lick Run and the Lick Run Greenway.

The existing traffic signal at the intersection of Orange Avenue and 11th Street will be removed, and the existing signal equipment along 10th Street will be replaced.

Project completion is expected in summer 2018.

This project is the first of two phases for improvements to 10th Street.  The second phase, from Andrews Road to Williamson Road, is not currently funded for construction but is being evaluated through the commonwealth’s project prioritization process as established by the 2014 General Assembly.  The results of the prioritization process will be known when the Commonwealth Transportation Board adopts a new construction budget in June.

The second phase of improvements is estimated to cost $12.5 million.
