BOARD AWARDS $48 MILLION CONTRACT TO REPLACE TWO BRIDGES IN THE NEW RIVER VALLEY
Northbound I-81 bridge over the New River and Route 232 bridge over I-81 to be replaced
SALEM — The Commonwealth Transportation Board at its meeting on September 21 in Fredericksburg awarded a $48-million contract to replace two bridges: the northbound Interstate 81 bridge over the New River located at the Montgomery and Pulaski county line at mile marker 105 and the Route 232 bridge over I-81 at exit 105 (Radford). The contract was awarded to Vecellio and Grogan Inc. from Beckley, West Virginia.
The new northbound I-81 bridge will have an extended deceleration lane for traffic exiting at exit 105 and wider shoulders than the current bridge which was originally constructed in 1965.
The new bridge over the New River will be built in the median parallel to the existing structure, so two lanes of traffic can be maintained in each direction on I-81 during construction.
Work on the project is anticipated to begin later this year and be completed in late 2020.
