TRAFFIC ALERT: GUARDRAIL AND BRIDGE WORK TO AFFECT EVENING AND MORNING COMMUTES ON INTERSTATE 81 IN BOTETOURT COUNTY

SALEM – Weather permitting, guardrail repairs and work on the Interstate 81 bridges over Route 779 (Valley Road) and Route 648 (Reservoir Road) will impact traffic on I-81 in Botetourt County next week.

Beginning next week, lane closures will be in place on a section of I-81 northbound between mile markers 162 and 167 for guardrail upgrades. Work will be performed on Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.  Motorists should use caution and watch for signs in the work zone. The repairs are estimated to be completed by the end of November.

Alternating lane closures will be in place as bridge repairs over Route 779 and Route 648 on I-81 continue. Next week, an extended lane closure is scheduled on I-81 at mile marker 151. The northbound right lane and shoulder will be closed from 6 p.m. Monday, September 28 until 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 29. Another extended lane closure is scheduled on I-81 at mile marker 147 where the southbound left lane and shoulder will be closed from 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, until 6 a.m. Wednesday, September 30.

These lane closures are necessary for bridge deck overlays. Work crews will be pouring concrete as part of replacing riding surfaces. Lane closures and detours are weather dependent and times are approximate. Each must remain in place until concrete sets.

As work in this area continues, alternating lane closures may be in place on the right and left side of the north and southbound lanes of I-81 near mile marker 151 and 147, Sunday through Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for bridge repairs to the bridge over Route 779 (Valley Road) and Route 648 (Reservoir Road).  Daytime lane closures may be in place while repair work is performed underneath the bridge.

Motorists should use caution in the work zone and expect delays in this area. These projects are estimated to be complete this fall.
