VDOT TO HOST CITIZEN INFORMATION MEETING FOR INTERSTATE 81 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT AT EXIT 114

SALEM — The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a citizen information meeting on a proposed project to replace the Interstate 81 bridges over Route 8 at exit 114 (Christiansburg) in Montgomery County.  The meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Christiansburg Middle School, Community Room 1, located at 1205 Buffalo Drive in Christiansburg.  This proposed project is in the early stages of development.

The primary purpose of this project is to replace the two I-81 bridges over Route 8 at exit 114 with wider bridges that provide increased vertical clearance.  To replace these bridges, I-81 would be realigned, the exit 114 ramps modified and the road grade changed at the approaches to the bridges.

As part of this bridge replacement project, future interchange concepts are being developed which will be used to complete the bridge replacement design.

The citizen information meeting is being held to provide an opportunity for citizens or organizations to give VDOT input on the proposed project.  The meeting will be held in an open-house format with no formal presentation given.  VDOT representatives will be present to discuss the proposed project and to answer questions.

Comments about the project may be submitted at the meeting or until October 3, 2014, by mail to Mr. Phillip Hammack, Virginia Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 3071, Salem, VA 24153.  E-mail comments can be sent to saleminfo@VDOT.virginia.gov.  Please reference “I-81/Route 8 Interchange Citizens Meeting Public Comment” in the subject heading.

Anyone requiring special assistance to attend and participate in this meeting may contact VDOT at 540-387-5353, 800-367-7623 or TTY/TDD 711.
