VDOT HOLDS HEARING FOR RELOCATION OF FALLING BRANCH PARK AND RIDE LOCATED OFF INTERSTATE 81 AT EXIT 118 IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY

SALEM —The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a design public hearing for an upcoming project, the relocation of the Park and Ride lot located at exit 118 off Interstate 81 in Montgomery County. The hearing will be held on Thursday, October 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Falling Branch Elementary School located at 735 Falling Branch Road in Christiansburg.

The primary purpose of this project is to permanently relocate and increase capacity of the Park and Ride to meet future demands. In the 1990s, VDOT constructed the original Park and Ride facility at I-81 exit 118 in the southwest quadrant of the I-81/ Route 460 Bypass interchange. VDOT relocated the facility in July 2014 to its present, temporary location along Route 11/460 Business (Roanoke Street), just east of the Route 460 Bypass/Route 460 Business (Roanoke Street) intersection in Christiansburg.

The proposed project will create a permanent location for the relocated Park and Ride at the intersection of Route 11/460 Business and Simmons Road in Christiansburg.  The new permanent lot will provide more than 200 spaces; the current temporary lot has 61 parking spaces. The new facility will be 350-feet by 500-feet or approximately 5.2 acres. The project also includes adding sidewalk, lighting, bus shelters, bike racks, bike lockers, informational kiosks, and handicap accommodations.

This hearing is being held to provide an opportunity for citizens or organizations to give VDOT input on the proposed project.  The hearing will be held in an open-house format with no formal presentation given.  VDOT representatives will be present to discuss the proposed project and to answer questions.

Comments about the project may be submitted at the hearing or until November 9 by mailing them to Lindsey S. Hodges, Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 3071, Salem, VA 24153.  Comments also can be emailed to saleminfo@vdot.virginia.gov.  Please reference “I-81 Exit 118 Relocation of Falling Branch Park & Ride Facility” in the subject heading.

Anyone requiring special assistance to attend and participate in this hearing may contact VDOT at 540-387-5353, 800-367-7623 or TTY/TDD 711.
