TEMPORARY PARK AND RIDE LOT TO OPEN AUGUST 1 IN CHRISTIANSBURG TO REPLACE FALLING BRANCH LOCATION
Bus service to begin at the new lot on August
SALEM – Beginning Friday, Aug. 1, a new temporary Park and Ride lot in Christiansburg will open to replace the existing Park and Ride lot off Interstate 81 at exit 118 near Falling Branch Elementary School. The new lot is located off Roanoke Street across from Hubbell Drive.
The lot will open on Friday initially for patrons who are not using bus service. MegaBus and the Smart Way bus will start using the new lot on Monday, Aug 4 when the existing 65-space lot located near Falling Branch Elementary School will close.
The Virginia Department of Transportation and contractor C.R. Henderson have built a temporary 65-space Park and Ride lot in Christiansburg while plans are being developed to construct a long-term facility that will provide more than parking 200 spaces.
VDOT currently is developing plans for the design of the permanent Park and Ride facility and estimates construction could begin as early as summer 2015. The permanent facility also will be located off Roanoke Street across from Hubbell Drive.
The existing 65-space Park and Ride lot located near Falling Branch Elementary School will be closed, and its pavement will be removed to restore this area to green space.
Funding to relocate and expand the Park and Ride facility at Falling Branch was included in the Commonwealth Transportation Board’s spending plan, the Six-Year Improvement Program (SYIP) for 2015-2020, which took effect July 1. Approximately $300,000 of the $5.8 million allocated in the SYIP will be spent on the temporary lot.
Relocating the lot will alleviate safety concerns from parents from nearby Falling Branch Elementary School about bus patrons who trespass on school property seeking restrooms or other amenities.
