TRAFFIC ALERT: SOUTHBOUND INTERSTATE 81 DETOUR IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY TO REMAIN IN PLACE OVERNIGHT
Drivers should expect congestion on southbound I-81 and Route 11/460

SALEM – Traffic is currently being detoured off southbound Interstate 81 south of Roanoke onto Route 11/460 at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns) and back onto the interstate at exit 118 (Christiansburg).  The detour is expected to remain in place overnight and into tomorrow morning.

An unstable rock slope was discovered along southbound I-81 in Montgomery County at mile marker 124.8 earlier today.  This location is within the work zone on southbound I-81 between mile markers 120 and 125 where a truck climbing lane is being built.

In the interest of safety, southbound I-81 is currently closed in the truck climbing lane work zone.  Geotechnical experts from the project contractor and the Virginia Department of Transportation are reviewing the slope to determine how to safely reopen southbound I-81.
