TRAFFIC ALERT: SECOND TRAFFIC SWITCH SCHEDULED FOR MONTGOMERY COUNTY TRUCK CLIMBING LANE PROJECT
Speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph in the work zone
SALEM – Nighttime detours are scheduled for Tuesday, May 28 and Wednesday May 29, on southbound Interstate 81 for the ongoing road construction project to build a five-mile truck climbing lane along southbound I- 81 in Montgomery County between mile markers 120 and 125. The speed limit throughout the work zone has been reduced to 55 miles per hour (mph).
The southbound detours will be in place beginning at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning. Southbound I-81 traffic will be detoured at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns) onto Route 11/460 and back onto I-81 at exit 118 (Christiansburg).
On Wednesday morning, May 29, crews will complete the implementation of a new traffic pattern throughout the project by shifting traffic to the newly constructed truck climbing lane and right shoulder on southbound I-81 between mile markers 120 and 124. This will allow crews to continue work improving the original lanes and left shoulder. Drivers should be alert to the changing traffic pattern and reduced speed limit.
Dates and times are tentative and could be adjusted due to weather or work schedule. Signs and message boards will be in place to alert drivers to the traffic detour and change.
Work on the truck climbing lane project is expected to be completed in November 2013.
