TRAFFIC ALERT: BLASTING SCHEDULED FOR ROUTE 220 BUSINESS IN FRANKLIN COUNTY

SALEM – As part of the ongoing work to replace and widen the bridge on Route 220 Business over the Pigg River in the Town of Rocky Mount, blasting to remove rock will be scheduled at various times through mid-March until the excavation is complete.

The first blast is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 16, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Blasting will occur up to two times a week as needed between late-morning and mid-afternoon. Message boards in the area will notify drivers of upcoming blast days and times. Flaggers will stop traffic for approximately 15 to 20 minutes when charges are being detonated.

Every effort will be made to minimize traffic disruptions and detonate the charges outside peak traffic times.  However, traffic in the vicinity of each blast will have to be stopped on Route 220 Business approximately 0.1 mile from the bridge in the north and southbound lanes and on Scuffling Hill Road and Orchard Avenue for the detonation of the explosive charges.

Signs and message boards will be in place.  Drivers should watch for flaggers and expect delays.

Work is dependent upon weather and work schedule.

Drivers are encouraged to call 511 or visit www.511Virginia.org for the latest information.
