TRAFFIC ALERT: LANE CLOSURE TO IMPACT TRAFFIC ON SOUTHBOUND INTERSTATE 81 IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Blasting in I-81 median for truck climbing lane project sends boulder into road

Debris from blasting on July 11, 2012

SALEM - During a blasting operation earlier this morning as part of the construction project to build a truck climbing lane on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County, a large boulder has unexpectedly fallen into the roadway.

Traffic on southbound I-81 is currently stopped while traffic control devices are put in place to establish a left lane closure at mile marker 123.  Crews are working to install the left lane closure as quickly as possible to get traffic moving.

The left lane closure will remain in place while construction crews remove the boulder.  Drivers on southbound I-81 should expect delays.

No estimated time for removing the large rock has been established at this time.
