SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation is recommending that motorists traveling to Fieldale, Va. on Saturday, May 16, to attend the fourth annual Fieldale Heritage Festival follow a particular route to avoid traffic congestion.

All motorists, even local traffic, should use the Route 220 Bypass, take the Route 609 Fieldale exit, and then proceed 1.9 miles on Route 609 to Fieldale.

Motorists, especially local drivers traveling from Collinsville, should avoid using South Daniels Creek Road and River Road.

Since April, traffic has been detoured onto River Road around the Route 701 bridge over the Smith River which is closed for replacement.

With the increased traffic in Fieldale due to the festival, there could be delays on South Daniels Creek Road and River Road, so VDOT is recommending that drivers avoid these routes.

Questions about replacing the Route 701 bridge over the Smith River can be directed to VDOT’s Martinsville Residency Office at 276-629-2581.
