TRAFFIC ALERT: OPENING OF COLONIAL AVENUE ROUNDABOUT IN ROANOKE COUNTY DELAYED UNTIL MID-OCTOBER
Wet weather and utility work are causing additional delays
SALEM – Wet weather and utility work have delayed the opening the Route 720 (Colonial Avenue) roundabout in Roanoke County until mid-October. A portion of Colonial Avenue from Route 1693 (Vest Drive) to Route 1620 (Hazel Drive) has been closed since Thursday, June 18 for road improvements, including the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Route 720 (Colonial Avenue) and Route 687 (Penn Forest Boulevard).
Wet weather and utility work delayed the reopening of Route 720 earlier this summer. The same factors have again delayed the reopening of the road until mid-October.
“The rain and utility work have had significant impacts on our construction schedule this year. While we cannot control mother nature, crews are working as quickly as possible to finish their work and reopen the road,” said Jeff Echols, P.E., northern area construction engineer for VDOT’s Salem District. “In the coming weeks, crews will be placing stone for the base of the roadway and constructing curbs, along with the placement of asphalt pavement, which are some of the final steps before the road reopens.”
The roundabout is one portion of a road improvement project designed to improve traffic flow on Colonial Avenue. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in August 2010.
Signs and electronic message boards will be posted to advise motorists of the detour.
