TRAFFIC ALERT: ROUTE 863 (DUTCH OVEN ROAD) BRIDGE IN ROANOKE COUNTY CLOSES TO TRAFFIC

SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation has closed the Route 863 (Dutch Oven Road) bridge over Mason Creek in Roanoke County.  The bridge is located on Route 863 which connects Route 419 and Route 311 in the Hanging Rock area.

This bridge is a multi-span concrete beam and deck structure that was built in 1920.  The bridge’s concrete is in very poor condition and practically has reached the end of its life. Based on the poor condition and traffic safety issues, VDOT has closed the bridge.

Signs are posted at Route 863’s intersections with Route 419 and Route 311 to advise motorists the road is closed to through traffic.  Local traffic will be able to use the road to access homes on Route 863, but traffic cannot cross the bridge. At the last traffic count in 2006, approximately 292 vehicles use the bridge each day.

VDOT has closed the bridge indefinitely. There are currently no funds identified to replace the structure.
