TRAFFIC ALERT: EXPECT LANE CLOSURE TONIGHT ON INTERSTATE 81 IN PULASKI COUNTY

The right lane of Interstate 81 in Pulaski County at mile marker 89 will be closed tonight (March 11) between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Crews will be installing a concrete barrier wall to replace the barrels used to close the ramp at exit 89A.

The bridge that carries southbound I-81 over Route 100 in Pulaski County was damaged when it was struck by an over height vehicle on Feb. 26.  The ramp leading from northbound Route 100 onto southbound I-81 and the ramp leading from southbound I-81 onto southbound Route 100 both have been closed since the bridge was damaged.

These ramps are expected to remain closed until the bridge can be repaired.  The Virginia Department of Transportation is working with its interstate maintenance contractor to develop an estimated timeframe for completing the repairs.  Two of the bridge’s concrete beams will need to be replaced.

During the ramp closures, drivers traveling on northbound Route 100 who need to access southbound I-81, can use Honaker Road to get onto I-81 at exit 86.  To access southbound Route 100 from southbound I-81, motorists should take exit 92 and use Kirby Road.

For updated information on I-81 lane closures, drivers can call 511 or go online to www.511Virginia.org.
