UPDATE: CONSTRUCTION RESUMES ON NEW KENT ROUNDABOUT WITH COMPLETION EXPECTED MAY 2017
Construction underway at the New Kent roundabout project
COLONIAL HEIGHTS — Construction is underway to complete a new roundabout that will improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection of New Kent Highway (Route 249) and Tunstall Road/Airport Road (Route 612). The roundabout will replace the intersection. Pavement will be widened to provide capacity for bicycle and pedestrian travel. The complete project cost is approximately $3.2 million.
Construction on this project originally began in spring 2015 with completion expected in fall of the same year. When the contractor defaulted, followed by its bonding company subsequently defaulting, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) worked over the past ten days to secure a new contractor to complete the work.
“We are exploring every option to hold the bonding company accountable for the incomplete construction and any costs associated with its default,” said Richmond District Engineer, Rob Cary. “The residents of New Kent County deserve quality work in a timely fashion, and we’re committed to fulfilling that obligation.”
VDOT awarded the project to Howard Brothers Contractor, Inc. to complete the work for $1.2 million. The contract requires the roundabout to be completed by May 5, 2017 and includes incentives for immediate mobilization and early completion.
