VDOT READY FOR UCI ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS SEPT. 19-27
Drivers should plan ahead to avoid delays

COLONIAL HEIGHTS – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is prepared to welcome the world as the 2015 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Road World Championships begins this weekend in Richmond. “We’ve been working with community partners for nearly three years to prepare for visitors to the region during the races,” said Rob Cary, L.S., P.E., Richmond District Engineer. “We’re excited for the opportunity to showcase our infrastructure and move Virginians and visitors safely and efficiently.”

Planned lane closures on state-maintained roads in the Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico and Richmond areas will be strictly limited during this time. Additionally, VDOT is augmenting staff in the traffic operations center and safety service patrol to prepare for potential congestion and increased traffic incidents.

Traffic impacts will be different each day of the race. Expect heavy traffic throughout the week, especially on the interstates near the metro area and on roads in the vicinity of the courses. VDOT encourages drivers to plan travel accordingly to avoid traffic delays and to learn the best alternate routes to reach their destinations. The bike races will take place in Hanover, Henrico and Richmond, which will close area roads and ramps on Interstate 95.

Drivers should note that the I-95 north/south exit ramps to Broad Street (Exit 74C) will be closed continuously from 10 a.m. Sept. 18 through 11 p.m. Sept. 27. Drivers heading northbound will be able to use the 74C exit ramp to Broad Street/Route 33 east. The planning organization, Richmond 2015, has full-color maps available of routes for each race and a navigation portal to assist those attending the races or simply getting around town during the event.
