QUALLA ROAD BRIDGE OPEN AHEAD OF SCHEDULE
Bridge opened to traffic today

COLONIAL HEIGHTS—The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has completed the bridge replacement on Qualla Road (Route 653) over Swift Creek in Chesterfield County. The bridge reopened to traffic today.

The 53 year old bridge was replaced under an emergency contract after advanced corrosion and deterioration were found during an inspection in April.  “We had a tremendous team effort between the department personnel and the contractor. They did an excellent job,” said Gary Martin, district bridge engineer. “We’re pleased to open the bridge ahead of schedule.” The bridge was originally slated for completion by the end of the month. Qualla Road carries approximately 5,800 vehicles from Newbys Bridge Road to Courthouse Road in Chesterfield.
