COLONIAL HEIGHTS—Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Acting Commissioner Greg Whirley approved three contracts last week valued at approximately $2 million for Richmond area construction.

B.P. Short & Son Paving Company Inc. of Petersburg was awarded a $1.6 million contract to mill and overlay the existing asphalt pavement on the following routes:

  • Hopewell – Four locations along Oaklawn Boulevard (Route 36) and High Avenue
  • Petersburg – North Sycamore Street and Bank Street
  • Chesterfield – Woods Edge Road (Route 620), Ruffin Mill Road (Route 746), River Road (Route 36/1107), Granger Street (Route 1121)
  • Dinwiddie – Ferndale Road (Route 600) and Sterling Road (Route 603)
  • Prince George – Jefferson Park/Bull Hill Road (Route 630) and Allin Road (Route 634)

The contractor will maintain one travel lane at all times during paving. The project is expected to be complete by December 2010.

Haley, Chisholm & Morris Inc. of Earlysville was awarded a $230,000 contract for improvements to Mill Quarter Road (Route 620) in Powhatan County. The project will involve widening and flattening the curve to improve driver visibility. In addition, they will address road drainage and install shoulders. The project will result in increased driver safety and efficiency Work is expected to be complete in October 2010.

Arthur Construction Company Inc. of Herndon was awarded a $235,000 contract to install sidewalks, curbs and gutters from the Stevens Hollow subdivision to Chalkley Elementary School in Chesterfield County. Five handicap ramps will also be installed. The existing cross walk on Turner Road will be relocated from the school exit to Caribbean Road. Estimated completion is October 2010.
