COLONIAL HEIGHTS—Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Commissioner Greg Whirley approved two contracts this week valued at approximately $1.3 million for Richmond area construction and maintenance.

L.S. Lee Inc. of Richmond was awarded a $538,000 contract to upgrade existing signs, sign structures and guardrails along I-95 between the Sussex County line and the I-85 interchange in Petersburg. The project may cause minor impacts to I-95 drivers. Completion is expected in May 2011

Colony Construction Inc. of Powhatan was awarded a $728,000 contract to overlay the existing pavement, and widen and pave the shoulders on Route 30 (New Kent Highway) in New Kent County and routes 271 (Pouncey Tract Road) and 301 (Chamberlayne Road) in Henrico County. This safety improvement will prevent the edge of the pavement from crumbling and will provide drivers with a smoother transition from the road to the shoulder. Expect alternating lane closures during construction. The contractor will maintain at least one travel lane at all times. Completion expected in May 2011.
