Residents encouraged to attend information meeting tomorrow

COLONIAL HEIGHTS — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a meeting on Thursday night to inform residents about plans to build a roundabout at the intersection of Ferndale Road (Route 600) and Cox Road (Route 226) in Dinwiddie County.

The public information meeting will be held Thursday, March 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Sutherland Elementary School cafeteria located at 6000 R. B. Pamplin Drive in Sutherland. The meeting will be open format with stations where residents can talk one-on-one with VDOT representatives. This flexible format allows participants to arrive whenever their schedule will allow. There will be a short presentation at 6:30 p.m.

The $2.8 million project will involve the construction of a roundabout with sidewalks. The new traffic pattern will improve driver and pedestrian safety and increase the number of vehicles that can use the intersection. The purpose of this informal meeting is to provide project information and allow citizen involvement at the beginning of the process.

“Once completed, this would be the first roundabout in Dinwiddie County,” said Jennifer Salyers, project manager. “We want to give residents an opportunity to learn more about roundabouts and how this project might improve safety at this intersection.” VDOT held a similar information meeting on December 17, 2009 in Petersburg. VDOT plans to hold a formal public hearing in spring 2011. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in spring 2014.

There are 78 roundabouts in Virginia. They are often used to reduce crashes, traffic delays, fuel consumption, air pollution, and construction and maintenance costs. In fact, roundabout construction is underway on Courthouse Road (Route 106) in Prince George County; project construction is scheduled for completion in August 2010.  For more information about roundabouts, visit
