BRADDOCK/PLEASANT VALLEY ROUNDABOUT CONSTRUCTION STARTS THIS MONTH
“Pardon our Dust” meeting April 14 at Stone Middle School
CHANTILLY—The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) invites drivers and residents to meet the Braddock Road/Pleasant Valley Road project team and learn more about the construction schedule at a “pardon our dust” meeting, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at Stone Middle School, 5500 Sully Park Drive, Centreville, VA 20120.
VDOT begins construction in late April to replace the existing four-way stop at the intersection of Braddock and Pleasant Valley roads with a one-lane roundabout in western Fairfax.
During weekday peak hours, the intersection experiences substantial congestion with extensive backups on Braddock Road eastbound in the mornings and westbound in the evenings.
The roundabout will improve operations and enhance safety by eliminating potential for turn or angle crashes at the intersection. The project also includes the following improvements:
• Enhanced pedestrian access including crosswalks and curb ramps
• Connections for the sidewalk into the existing trail along the east side of Pleasant Valley Road south of the intersection
• Lighting and landscaping
VDOT is administering the $5.8 million project in cooperation with Fairfax County. Fort Myer Construction Corporation is the design-build contractor. The project is expected to be complete in Spring 2016.
As of 2012, about 7,500 vehicles per day travelled this section of Braddock Road and about 8,500 travelled along Pleasant Valley Road.
