COLUMBIA PIKE DETOUR THIS WEEKEND

ARLINGTON— Columbia Pike will be closed to traffic between South Quinn Street and South Orme Street from 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 until 4:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Weather permitting, the weekend closure will allow crews to place steel beams for the new northbound Washington Boulevard bridge.

The closure will require motorists to follow a detour. Message signs are positioned on Columbia Pike and Washington Boulevard advising motorists of the upcoming closure.

  • Columbia Pike traffic, including pedestrians and bicyclists, will be detoured around the work area to a temporary signal at Washington Boulevard.
  • Northbound Washington Boulevard to westbound Columbia Pike will be detoured to Second Street South interchange and back to Columbia Pike via South Courthouse Road.
  • Southbound Washington Boulevard to eastbound Columbia Pike will turn left at the temporary signal on Washington Boulevard and follow the detour back to Route 244.
  • South Queen Street will be closed at its intersection with Columbia Pike.

VDOT’s construction project to replace the Washington Boulevard Bridge over Columbia Pike will be complete in summer 2015. The new $51.5 million bridge will be wider, longer, and accommodate turn lanes. More information on the project is available at http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/northernvirginia/route_27-244_interchange.asp. Washington Boulevard carries more than 80,000 vehicles per day over Columbia Pike.
