STORM CLEAN UP CONTINUES, CAUTION URGED
Route 58 East in Pittsylvania County closed, traffic detoured

LYNCHBURG —Flooded roads, downed trees and power lines, as well as other damage are left behind as the rain and wind from Hurricane Matthew move away from the area.

On US 58 East in Pittsylvania County near Routes 62 and 726, a large sinkhole occurred Saturday night. Both eastbound lanes of US 58 are closed in the area and traffic is being detoured via VA 62 to NC 57, NC 119 and VA 119 back to US 58 East. An evaluation has been done of the incident and plans are underway to have the road reopened within a week or sooner, if possible.

Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation Lynchburg District responded to numerous calls to quickly get roads open.

Motorists are encouraged to continue to use caution as the ground is still very wet and wind gusts could lead to additional downed trees.
