Route 15/360 at Route 47 Roadway Safety Assessment Released

LYNCHBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has finalized the Route 15/360 at Route 47 Roadway Safety Assessment and presented the findings to the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors today.

The assessment is an examination of the safety performance of an intersection by a multidisciplinary team, including a citizen representative and members of the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors, county administration, Virginia State Police, Charlotte County Highway Committee, Commonwealth Regional Council, VDOT and its consultant. The team’s goals are to identify potential safety issues contributing to crashes in the intersection, qualitatively assess the safety risks of those issues and recommend treatments to mitigate the safety concerns.

The Route 15/360 at Route 47 intersection has had a history of crashes and corrective measures, including construction of offset turn lanes, signage, flashing warning beacons and pavement markings have been tried.

After final analysis a two-tier recommendation was developed. A traffic signal was recommended and installation is planned. The long term recommendation is corridor-wide improvements, including a directional median, also referred to as a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT)/J-Turn intersection. SMART SCALE funding successfully obtained by Charlotte County and currently allocated for this location will be used to address the initial improvements.
