SECTION OF CLARKTON BRIDGE CLOSED
Pedestrian bridge located over Staunton River between Charlotte and Halifax Counties

LYNCHBURG – The annual inspection of the over 100-year old Clarkton Bridge on the Charlotte/Halifax County line over the Staunton River is underway and initial findings have led the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to conduct further evaluation that will result in the closure of the truss near the Halifax County end of the bridge during the remainder of the inspection.

To ensure public safety, bridge safety inspectors, concerned with the condition and age of the bridge, will use an ultrasound system to look more carefully at the bridge’s structural components.

Once the inspection and evaluation are complete, VDOT will be in a position to determine how best to proceed.

VDOT will provide further updates once additional information is available.
