PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY BRIDGE NAMED “IRVIN C. BURTON, SR. MEMORIAL BRIDGE”
LYNCHBURG — At the request of the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) has named the bridge on Route 360 East over Route 29 Bypass as the ‘Irvin C. Burton, Sr. Memorial Bridge.”
Educated in Pittsylvania County, Mr. Burton was a farmer, landscaper and businessman. He spearheaded the creation of the county’s community action agency was a force behind the Dan River-Blairs Civic League and an advocate for public education for all children.
According to the resolution from the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors, in 1965, Burton’s “advocacy and assistance for voter registration earned him the recognition of “Man of the Year’ in Pittsylvania County by the Dan River-Blairs Civic League. He also played a pivotal role during the integration of public schools in Pittsylvania County, as well as advocating the hiring and appointment of qualified African Americans to various positions throughout the County Government.”
Burton passed away in 1998 and his dedication and contributions to citizens of Pittsylvania County were recognized by both the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors and the Commonwealth of Virginia General Assembly.
Signage will be installed on the bridge to reflect this designation.
