ROADS SNOW-COVERED IN PORTIONS OF NELSON COUNTY (10 pm)
Roads wet in rest of VDOT’s Lynchburg District

LYNCHBURG- (10 pm) Roads in the higher elevations of Nelson County are snow covered this evening, while those across the rest of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Lynchburg District are merely wet from the rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow that have fallen all afternoon.

Motorists are urged to use caution as driving conditions may become more hazardous overnight and into early Monday as precipitation continues and temperatures fall.

VDOT’s Lynchburg District crews will concentrate their clean-up efforts on major roadways first. They will push snow once it has reached an appropriate level and will apply salt and sand to melt snow and improve traction, as needed.

Motorists are advised to use caution or to delay travel during the storm, if possible. If travel is necessary, VDOT offers the following winter driving tips:

  • Know the conditions before you go! Check VDOT’s www.511virginia.org, call 511 and/or check local media.
  • Make sure your vehicle is winter ready – completely clear all windows, lights, and side mirrors before driving.
  • Keep an emergency driving kit in your car.
  • Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles and allow extra time for travel.
  • Be alert to the possibility of downed trees, limbs and other items.
  • When driving on ice, don’t slam on your brakes. Travel gently. Turn slowly. Sudden changes can cause your car to spin out of control.

The Lynchburg District is comprised of the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward.
