Candler’s Mountain Road locations in Lynchburg among those in use

LYNCHBURG – Traffic signals at 91 intersections in the Lynchburg and Salem Districts of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have been or are currently being upgraded with Flashing Yellow Arrow signals.  These signals were modified to improve safety for left turn movements.  On these new left turn signal heads, the flashing yellow arrow replaces the previous solid green ball which directed drivers to yield before making their left turn. Additionally, signs stating “left turn on flashing yellow arrow” are temporarily installed to alert motorists.

Among the new signals that are currently activated are those on Candler’s Mountain Road in the vicinity of River Ridge Mall.  The new signals will allow drivers to turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic.

Flashing yellow arrows are more effective than the more common circular green light and other signals at conveying to drivers the need to yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians when turning left.

VDOT is expanding the use of the signals based on local success with these types of signals reducing the number of crashes associated with left turn movements at other locations.
