ROUTE 685 (CHALK LEVEL ROAD) TO BE CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC
Bridge over Route 29 to be rebuilt

LYNCHBURG—Motorists will use alternate routes for several months while the bridge on Route 685 (Chalk Level Road) over Route 29 in Pittsylvania County is rebuilt. 

The road closure will begin January 17, 2011, weather permitting, and will last approximately 270 days.  Signs will be posted along the established detour routes.  The recommended detour routes are:

For motorists traveling east on Route 685 (Chalk Level Road) from Chatham:

  • Turn left and take the on ramp to Hwy 29 south;
  • Travel 1 mile, exit onto Hwy 57 (Halifax Road);
  • Turn left and cross over Hwy 29;
  • Turn left and take the on ramp to Hwy 29 north;
  • Travel 1 mile, exit onto Route 685 (Chalk Level Road)

For motorists traveling west on Route 685 (Chalk Level Road) toward Chatham:

  • Turn right and take the on ramp to Hwy 29 north;
  • Travel 1.2 miles, exit onto US 29 Business (Main Street);
  • Turn left and cross over Hwy 29;
  • Turn left and take the on ramp to Hwy 29 south;
  • Travel 1.2 miles, exit onto Route 685 (Chalk Level Road). 

This bridge is one of 11 structures to be rehabilitated as part of a design-build contract awarded to UCI-Virginia, Inc. and funded with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) monies.
