Severe weather brings down trees and power lines

Severe weather, including a possible tornado, were reported in the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) last night and during the early hours of this morning.  Several roads in Halifax County have been closed at various times due to downed trees and power lines.

As of 4:30 a.m., the following roads are reported as closed in Halifax County:

  • Route 642 (Liberty Road) off US 501
  • Route 626 (Clarkton Road) from Route 625 to Route 632

Motorists should plan extra travel time this morning and be alert to the possibility of debris along the roadways and additional closed roads.  VDOT crews are out in many areas clearing debris and assessing damages from the storms; therefore pay close attention to workers and signs alerting motorists of clean-up activities.
