PUBLIC HEARING APRIL 26 ON ROUTE 460/29 SAFETY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
LYNCHBURG—The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a public hearing to gather public comment on the design of safety improvements to Route 460/29 (Richmond Highway) between Route 501 (Campbell Avenue) and Route 29 (Monacan Parkway) in the City of Lynchburg.
The hearing will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, at Ramey Auditorium, 4303 Campbell Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24501. At the hearing VDOT staff will provide information on the proposed project, answer questions and review the process the project will follow from design through construction.
The project will provide additional safety improvements to the Route 460/29 corridor through the implementation of access management strategies. Safety improvements will be realized by removing speed differentials in the travel lanes and reducing turning movements and conflict points which have contributed to increased traffic crashes since the opening of the Monacan Parkway. This will be accomplished by constructing auxiliary lanes so traffic entering/leaving Route 460/29 will have lanes in which to accelerate or decelerate to and from highway speeds; reducing and/or relocating private and business entrances; constructing right turn lanes at Falwell Airport and Templeton Market; constructing a new access road off the auxiliary lane for access to Truck Body Corp. and residents in or near the trailer park.
The preliminary cost estimated for the project is $11.7 million, including engineering, right of way and construction. This estimate is subject to change as the project develops further.
VDOT expects the project to advance through the design phase this year, with approval for right-of-way acquisition anticipated in June 2012. Advertisement for construction is scheduled for April 2015 and construction would be expected to begin in June 2015.
Plans and environmental documents for the project will be available for review at the public hearing. The plans may also be reviewed at VDOT’s Lynchburg District Office, 4219 Campbell Ave. in Lynchburg. Please call ahead, 434-947-6559, to ensure that appropriate staff will be available to assist you.
Written and oral comments will be accepted at the public hearing. Written comments submitted through May 6, 2011 will also be considered and made a part of the public hearing transcript. Comments may be submitted to Mr. Robert H. Cary, PE, LS at the address above or emailed to email@example.com. Please include “Route 460/29 Public Hearing Comment” in the subject line.
