LYNCHBURG – Gregory A. Whirley, Commissioner, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently approved a request to restrict through truck traffic on Routes 733 and 734 in Pittsylvania County.

Establishment of this restriction means that through traffic of trucks, trucks and trailers and semi-trailer combinations cannot use Route 734 (Ringgold Road) and route 733 (Barker Road) between Route 58 (South Boston Highway) in the City of Danville and Route 1299 (Cane Creek Parkway) in Pittsylvania County.  The closure does not apply to such vehicles with points of origin or destination along the affected routes.

Following a request from Pittsylvania County (?), VDOT conducted a traffic study and analysis on the proposal and determined that the routes met the criteria for consideration.  Among the criteria considered were provision of reasonable alternative routes; incompatibility of truck traffic with the proposed restriction (Routes 734 & 733); residential nature of development adjacent to the proposed restricted route (Route 734 & 733) and Functional Class of either Local or Collector for proposed restriction.

VDOT will erect the proper signs to notify the traveling public of this closure.

A second Through Truck Restriction request for Routes 665 (Rockford School Road), 634 (Blue Ridge Drive & Prospect Road) and T-924 (East Hurt Road) is still under review.
