Route 29 Business Closure Delayed
Bridge over Route 29 Bypass to be rebuilt

LYNCHBURG —Area motorists may be able to sleep in a little longer on Tuesday morning than planned since the closure of the Route 29 Business (Main Street) Bridge over the Route 29 Bypass in Chatham has been delayed.

The Virginia Department of Transportation had previously announced that the closure would take place beginning July 6 and would last for approximately 270 days; however, due to delays experienced by UCI Virginia, Inc., the prime contractor, the road will remain open until at least mid-July.  Notice will be given in advance of the closure.

Route 29 Business will be closed to through traffic at the east- and westbound on and off ramps to the Route 29 Bypass.

Motorists on the northern end of the project will detour via Route 29 Business to Route 29 Bypass and back to Route 29 Business; motorists on the southern end of the project will detour via Route 29 Bypass to Route 685 (Chalk Level Road) and back to Route 29 Business.
